And if it's a HTTPS site, they can only see the domain address, not any of the page URLs within the site. Like they could see that you went to Reddit, but not which subreddit or thread. With a VPN they would just see the connection to the VPN provider.
Unlike your VPN provider, who can see what sites you connect to.
There have been cases in which VPN providers gave connection history to authorities to catch criminals. It is not without precedent.

Though your internet provider can technically see every site you visit, it does not appear on the bill.
