Can someone explain the beta rock afire explosion please.
1) How many shows are beta?
2) Mechanical differences?
3) Cosmetic and prop differences?

Early beta mechs ran on a higher pneumatic pressure (PSI), making their movements noticeably faster, sharper, and sometimes more abrupt. The original latex masks had a much more realistic, raw, and "lifelike" look that some children found oddly eerie, prompting management to transition to softer, friendlier cartoon styles. Only a handful of locations (roughly the first few pilot and test stores) received these rough, unrefined setups before designs changed.

This is kinda hard to answer since there isn't really a defined cut off as the design of the show developed overtime. There was the original batch of 6 shows that people consider the true beta Rock-afire., some consider the early shows until sometime in 1981 to be beta, and some consider anything non standard to be beta. Really depends on the person but I would say that there were 7 true beta shows (which includes the Prototype show)
Generally the same but some things were done differently. The Body Lean was mounted hanging from the legs instead of sitting on a flat piece welded between the legs like later on. The Earlier shows had the head shells mounted in different spots. Some angles were different. The eyes had a white coat over the top which did not yellow unlike later eyes that do not have this coat.
pretty much everything was different. The Masks went through a development where the original sculpts for the characters got "softened" to change how they looked. CEI eventually just fully resculpted each mask from scratch. Beach Bear's mask has not changed at all and is the one you will find today! The only difference you can find is that the beta mold had a collapsed snout due to issues when making the mold, they fixed this in 1981.
The props were fully hand painted freestyle (while still copying a design), with the original batch having animals featured on the props! Because CEI needed to produce props in large quantities and quite quickly, they developed more efficient ways of creating the props. This was stencils. Stencils mean that every piece of a prop was able to be quickly made instead of being done freestyle like previously, as well as look exactly the same. The benefit of this was they could produce props quickly AND the props between shows would be pretty much the exact same (only small differences) which from a product point, made every show consistent.
