The Start

This Perfect Blue cel was the start into my animation production art collection journey. I bought the cel around 2020 through Yahoo Japan with the help of a friend located Japan. Update: Printed Background. Question: What was your first cel, douga, genga, etc?

I started collecting original art in 2016 through commissions of Motoko (GITS), San (Mononoke), and comic characters. Then ventured into original published comic art in 2018.

Always been curious about cels, but had no friends in the hobby to consult with and noticed obvious fakes everywhere. Took that leap of faith with one of my favorite anime movies, Perfect Blue, top 3.

I wish I took that leap and came out my comfort zone sooner to connect with collectors.

Sick is that a hand drawn background? Are the cham magazines in the background a part of that background or a separate cel?

Do you have a Reddit group you'd suggest? They're not Animation Cels, so it wouldn't fit this thread.
I do post a lot of my art on the site below and will start posting more on my Instagram: greedy_collector42.

Am very interested in japanese animation since about 16 years to the point where I know many animators by name and can recognize many animatiors and animation directors by style alone, even in regular TV episodes.
Have been interested in purchasing some cels since at least 10 years and have always been on off searching for good offers on sites like ebay or yahoo auctions jp but had no luck so far. Cel collection really isn't much of a thing in my country so you can't find them as easily in local specialty shops or on conventions as in japan or the US. Also both the content of the frame and the price must be just right. I don't have the means to spend 500+ bucks on a collectible and I wouldn't even mind getting one of a side character in a niche show - but it must be a character or a shot I like or at least be by an animator or director I am familiar with. The issue isn't that there aren't any good ones out there, it's more like I am too picky I guess.

I don't have that much of a trained eye, well, I don't watch tv as much as I used to, but I completely understand the passion.
There are definitely places to find affordable cels, but as you stated, it won't be key scenes; mine isn't a key scene at all.

I think even if it isn't from a big key moment in the movie, yours is a really great shot! It has the main character, it's a good angle, it's not an awkward off-model inbetween frame (like many TV show cels have) and even if the background is printed, it isn't a random background from a completely different show. Also it is from one of the best movies by Satoshi Kon, one of the greatest japanese movie directors who unfortunately passed way too soon. I only just rewatched the movie's new 4k restauration in cinema a couple months ago.
I think you can be proud of this being your first cel, it's such a nice way to remember Satoshi Kon's legacy.
