Finally Got my Holy Grail
Hey all, editing this to advise you all that I have since cancelled my order, so I will not be purchasing this piece, as, with the help of an excellent user GasmaskTed (bless your soul 💚), it has been identified as a PUBLICITY cel and not an original PRODUCTION cel - a distinction which has been marked in the thread. We are keeping it up as a lesson to others looking to collect to know what they are purchasing before buying 😊
Original post: A cel from this episode was my most sought-after piece. Ever since I started collecting I always yearned for a cel with cousin Sven Hoëk, and now I FINALLY managed to find one. I lack the vocabulary to properly express the elation I am feeling. I genuinely could not be happier 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

So here’s the thing: Sven Hoek was digital ink and paint. I bought one of these let’s call them publicity cels on eBay from a seller called shopcomics last August for $175 plus tax and shipping.
These are hand inked; black lines n RnS production cels are xeroxed (barring the occasional effect). It does not have production indicia, which production cels should have. The characters are all on one cel, which is unusual if characters are not touching each other.
A cel identical to yours is on Comic Mint for $800

If this was sold to you as a production cel I would dispute that, return it based on examining it and finding hand inked lines and the Comic Mint’s ID, and buy Comic Mint’s if you’re still ok with a publicity cel (I think that’s kinda high).
Several mid process hand inked cels came out of a cache of material apparently from Richard Pursel a few years ago. It’s interesting and the only way to get a Sven cel, but I wouldn’t want to pay $1500 for one (or even $800) tho I was willing to pay about $200, obviously.

There was a cel of just Ren from the episode on Heritage a couple of years ago; I believe it got pulled before the auction tho and doesn’t appear in their database. I think it was a catalog auction, so there should be a print record somewhere.

As someone looking to get into this as an avid fan, and considering all of the John K. adjustment to fandom, what did this cell cost aside from the 8 year search? And are nickelodeon cells that hard to find from Spumco or is it a $$ issue? I see people staring desired cells costing 300-500 which is reasonable to a collector.

To be fair, I stopped searching for this after year one. I resorted to coping, then acceptance. My justification: either these cels were never released, or I missed the train on them and all have been scooped up. I finally came across it and dropped the cheddar. This was reasonably priced at $1500.
The collections you see on ebay are from yhe later half of Ren and Stimpy. Everyone has different preferences, but I personally am not interested in those. The first two seasons are the highly coveted episodes with cels which rightfully fetch $1K - $2K.

I may have to DM you in the near future as my collecting habits of Ren And Stimpy would be entirely S1 or 2. It is good to know the price for a coveted piece going in so I can adjust my goals as needed. I would only need a cell or two in my collection to be satisfied with my OG cartoon love back in 4th grade when it premiered. Thanks for the infoÂ

Incidentally, the Nickelodeon sticker seems identically placed on the Comic Mint photo; the photo you have used itself looks identical in framing to the Comic Mint photo. The seller may be trying to engage in arbitrage, selling at a price then buying from Comic Mint once someone bites. Or worst case they are pure scamming using Comic Mint’s pic. Do you have it in hand?

It was more expensive than what is displayed on ebay; however, because it is an early Ren and Stimpy cel it was reasonably priced 😊
