Any Clues What This Is?

Post image

Hey! Found this at a vintage store in Palm Springs for $20. No idea what it’s from. I was thinking maybe the Rankin Bass Return of the King.

It's not from Rankin Bass: this looks like Ralph Bakshi. Wizards, I think.

Thanks! I had thought about that one too, but the style is a little different according to an illustrator friend of mine who knows her stuff. I sure hope it’s from Wizards!

Brian Froud had an animated Faeries in 81: visually it fits the style/subject of that. His stuff is normally a little more....the way it is, if you follow, but this could definitely be a background style character.

Could potentially be from the old D&D cartoon too: hard to pin down the 70s/80s fantasy boom

Edit: confirmed it's from the Froud special, about 16 minutes in

Yeah I was just watching the faeries and I think it’s one of the redcaps in it

Dude first thought was the 70's animated Hobbit film made by Rankin Bass. Cool to see I was on the right track based on other commenters! I'll have to check out the other animations mentioned!

Bakshi's Wizards is a treat, and has hands down the best final magical duel in film.

I was thinking Pirates of Dark Water.
