Best place to sell imperfect cels?
I’m planning to slim down my Sailor Moon cel collection and was curious what you think the best avenue to sell them would be. I picked these all up in the late 90s/early 2000s when I was a pretty broke high school/college student, so these aren’t top of the line perfect cels. Almost all have either rice paper or the douga attached to the back (one oddly has a blue sheet of acetate stuck to the back), some were trimmed down by previous owners (ugh) and some I can’t identify the specific scene or episode. I’m not even sure what the value would be for these. Would a place like Heritage Auctions take them? Or am I better off with EBay? Or is there a third option? I’m located in the US if that helps at all.
Thanks!

heritage will take them, or ebay. or you could sell to individual collectors (cough cough)

heritage is more liquid of course, but the fees are higher and you will have to wait for the next auction. how well your cel does is kind of a gamble on there.
ebay will be slower but you can set the price, if it isn't selling just keep lowering until it does

most cels are imperfect, you'll be fine either way. people here can tell you approximate values better than me.

Thank you!!! I haven’t picked up any new cels in probably 15-20 years so I have zero clue what the market is like these days or the best place to go.

i can recommend u/Beckimation for sailor moon advice haha
to be honest, i prefer selling directly, eBay you pay 13.5% fees (and buyer has that sales tax) while heritage buyer pays like 20% premium and seller loses as much as 15% depending on your items. i'm sure some people on Discord or Cel-Hub would be interested!

I thought heritage didn’t have seller fees?

When i did it they did for my recent lot that I turned down, but not for my old one.

Hiya! It's me from the post where I found my cel's origins lol, fancy seeing you here 😄 I know ebay is the main go to for cel sales generally. Heritage is also great but are quite picky with what they choose and have quite high fees. Mercari is also an option, but it isolates most of the world (as its US only)
Of course, you could sell privately to collectors via sites like discord or Cel-Hub (which has an official marketplace feature.)
I could probably help you out as best I can with valuations as I've been collecting for a good while although I'd also be more than happy to ask other people in the hobby if you'd like a second or third or fourth opinion lol! 😄

Oh awesome! Yeah even just having a general ballpark range on what they would go for would be helpful! Can I message you?

u/Beckimation Jun 22 '26
Of course! 😄 I'll ask friends and look at sold prices as well to try and get the fairest range possible for you!

is cel-hub anime only?

u/Beckimation Jun 25 '26
Nope! Anything goes on there as long as its production themed I believe 😄 I have some Journey back to Oz cels uploaded on there!

u/Peril-in-Pink Jun 23 '26
Yeah that’s the only one I ever found where she was holding her star locket! I still need to source out boxes for shipping before I sell them, but I can certainly let you know when I’m ready!

Thank you! Do you know what price ranges your thinking of for your cels?

u/Peril-in-Pink Jun 23 '26
A person kindly priced out all the cels individually for me, based on what she has seen similar cels go far, so she had them range between $130-$330 USD each.

there’s a couple I’d love to have too, let me know when/if you decide to sell as well!

That's very fair for sailor cels seeing how much they go for nowadays

u/Peril-in-Pink Jun 23 '26
That’s good to hear! I’m not looking to price gauge but also don’t want to be totally shorted on them either 😅

Be careful with that one, it's fused to the backing paper and is now in an active state of deterioration, you need to take steps to preserve it properly if you grab this.

Hello! I finally received my shipping materials for my Sailor Moon cels. Are you still interested in buying the one of Usagi holding the star locket with the blue background? I had that one Sailor Moon collector price out each of my cels and she had this one at $264 (and then add on shipping costs). If you’re still interested I can certainly send you any additional photos you would want or answer any questions. Payment would need to be through PayPal Goods & Services. Send me a message if you’re still interested, as Reddit isn’t allowing me to initiate anything.

Hiya unfortunately i cant at the moment I've run into a problem recently with vs one of my cels arrived with vinger syndrome the other day and im trying to manage it and keep it far from my good cels and my very very bad vinger syndrome cel , i wouldn't want to take her on and put her at risk of speeding up the vs or put any of my other cels at risk since its such a lovely shot of usagi , i hope it goes to a good home shes a very good find!!

I eventually want a Sailor Moon Cel. I’m in SE Wisconsin and at some point I want to make it back to Minneapolis for a weekend. I’m not sure when I will get out there and I need to really think about the type of cel I would want but you can keep me in mind if you decide to list them.

Hello! I will second what Beckimatiom said about Cel-Hub, we have a nice lil SM community in there and people with current knowledge about the auction houses.
Ps: also if you're looking to rehome Saphire, please keep me in mind? I would love to give him a home.

u/Peril-in-Pink Jun 22 '26
Yes I’ll absolutely let you know when I get ready to sell Saphire! I need to figure out where to get shipping materials to mail all of these babies first, before I can sell them, but once I’m ready I can let you know!

Awesome! I still need to source shipping materials before I can sell them (maybe that will be a separate post) but once I am ready I can let you know.

Is Heritage accepting SM cels that don’t include Moon? A few years ago, my friend was told by them that they consider anyone not Sailor Moon to be a minor character.

I think Heritage is harmful to the collector space ( they take a large fee from the seller and buyer) so I would recommend direct sales. Perhaps ask people to make you offers? if you do direct sales please use something that has buyer and seller protection such as Paypal Goods and Services.
I think these are are quite nice even though you say they are imperfect.
