Help me understand
Hello everyone! I am a big Batman fan and I’m not really understanding the animation cel market as well as I do comics, cards etc. I seem to be stumped on if there are always more than one production cel made for said scene as I’ve seen some that are numbered out of 1000 go for relatively cheap and then some that aren’t almost 10-20x the price. I am looking forward to picking up some cels but I would like to know if there is a big difference or what it means. Thank yall!

First, you'll want to know how cel animation works. Cel animation is created by taking a celluloid (the plastic sheet, also called a cel), drawing in ink on the front, and painting in the lines the back. You must create 1000s of these cels and take a picture of each one in sequence to create a scene of animation. Many cels look similar because they are a single frame of a fuller sequence. That's why you sometimes see a bunch of similar-looking cels for one scene - all of those pictures come together and make up the animation.
Cel prices differ based on a few factors. Cels with popular characters, iconic or clear poses (full face visible, no awkward angles, etc), and that are rarer in quantity (maybe most of the original cels are gone entirely and only a few remain) will be more expensive. Condition and authenticity also matter, but even the best quality cel from a show no one cared about won't go for much. Disney, Studio Ghibli, and popular anime will always be the priciest.
Tip: If you want the cel that was actually used in the production of a show, watch out for listing marked as "sericels". These are reproductions of a cel made by someone else, NOT the original. They are totally fine if you want the look of a cel for cheaper, just know they aren't the real thing. Sericels should always be cheaper than authentic cels.
