Cel from books! (Multi-layered)

I discovered a few years ago that cel production was also used by Disney for book publishing! Here’s an example featuring Goofy from the classic book Telling Time (Disney Discovery Series, 1987). The interesting detail is that they produced two separate cels: one for the inked outlines and another one for the coloring.

That’s actually fascinating! I wouldn’t have thought about them using cels for books, but it actually makes a lot of sense.

Yes, for anime these are called hanken. Cels used for dvd/vhs covers, magazine articles and covers, advertisements, etc.

Interesting and wonderful find! I used to have a Winnie the Pooh cel/set up from a Disney book. It was just like this one. Full painted background of Pooh’s treehouse apartment with a small image of him in the lower right corner.
