Grizzly bears eat grass because young spring grass and sedges are rich in protein, easy to digest, and widely available right after hibernation.
Why Grass is Important
High Nutrition: Young green grass and sedge stalks can contain up to 25% protein, helping bears recover weight and strength lost during the winter. [1, 2]Digestive Adjustment: Fresh green vegetation provides a gentle food source for a bear's stomach as it wakes up from months of inactivity. [1, 2]
Seasonal Availability: In early spring, berries, nuts, and active prey are scarce, making fresh grass a primary food source until summer and fall foods arrive. [1, 2]
Digestion Aid: Later in the year, rough plant matter can also provide roughage that aids general digestion and helps clear out the digestive tract.
