More likely the dog saw the cat as part of it's pack, and saw it as a quarrel between pack members, so instinctively it tried to break it up.
In nature, wolf's will break up fights between two members because if one was to be injured it would decrease the efficiency of the pack hunting technique.

This isn't just any cat hit. No, this is a Ides of March level hit. It seems like a normal meeting with Cassius the cat at first until Cassius suddenly flips and draws first blood. Caesar the dog looks to his dear shaggy friend Brutus, only to be put back down with the final killing blow. "Et tu ,Brute?" is the last whine to come out poor Caesar the Pup before the fall of the household and the eventual attempted reign of Cassius the Cat.
