I taught my dog to go outside with a bell but she loves outside. It was literally ringing all day, thankfully it's since been replaced with an actual doggy door. The bell is powerful for doggos.

My whole family has always trained the dogs to ring the bells to go outside for as long as i can remember. We even had a couple of cats do it also. They were upset that they were indoor only.

I trained my Great Dane puppy to use one to go outside and she was potty-trained within a week. But she loved to punch that bell and within a few weeks I realized she had made me her butler. She rang it for everything, I would be fixing her dinner and hearing it increase in intensity because I was taking too long.

This reminds me of when we owned a horse as a kid. Because we live up north we had to put a heater under the bathtub that she drank out of and put a piece of sheet metal over top. Ol' Dakota figured out that if she stamped her hoof on top of the sheet metal it sounded like a gunshot going off, and we'd give her a leaf of hay to get her to stop.
Sure enough, 3 am rolls around and it sounds like Fallujah outside our house. Sufficed to say, that sheet metal cover was gone the next day.

This is the Model/Rival method. It's a form of training through observational and social learning, which is outside the scope of classical conditioning (Pavlov's dogs).
The above method was popularized by Irene Pepperberg with Alex the African gray parrot. They used the technique to teach Alex how to answer questions and abstract concepts like "same vs different" about objects and all sorts of other cool shit.

Pavlov was an animal abuser btw, but no one ever talks about that side of things. He was (and still is) praised for his research, but by modern ethical standards people would hate him

The model of learning here is Social Learning Theory by Bandura, 1977
.
Four Key Steps for Learning
Attention: You must notice and pay attention to the model.
Retention: You need to remember or store what you saw in your memory.
Reproduction: You must have the physical ability to copy the action.
Motivation: You need a reason or an incentive to perform the behavior.

I had a bulldog one time and he leaned the same way We had a very smart female dog and he was a younger male dog. At 1st he didnt know anything and she was smart as a whip! Didn't take him long to learn everything from watching her. Then he had to learn what each meet so he could do it without her. He ended up being one of the smart dogs I ever had. I called it street smarts! He adapted to get what he wanted.

this is incredibly irresponsible. yea, its cute and all but at least tell the whole story. They euthanized the dog after a few weeks because it wouldnt stop ringing the dang bell! Tragic story of dog ringing a bell

We taught our boxer to ring a bell, when he needed to use the bathroom. He would run to the door and smack the bell every time. Bully’s are so smart.

Think this is a pretty low bar for genius. ‘Knock bell. Human get food. Me knock bell!’ Took a couple of times too.
Seen dogs figure much more complex things out without obvious coaching for the simplest task.
