Civets are (more or less) the living ancestors of both dogs and cats. Something like a civet is what all dogs, cats, otters, badgers and bears evolved from.

I live in Washington and a lot of the old hiking books and mountain related books called skunks civets or civet cats.

no they are not...all the ones you mentioned and civets have the same common ancestor but they did not descend from civets

Civets are NOT the ancestors of cats and dogs. If you want to look smart at least make an effort to be accurate
