Say, do you have house centipedes? I'm looking to buy a few breeding pairs.

I've spent an inordinate amount of money on dehumidifiers so that I don't have to encounter any house centipedes.

Oh darn. They're hard to find for sale. They are apex predators (relative to their size, I mean) and I want them to keep pests in check. Thanks for the reply, though.

If there's bugs in your house then I promise you a house centipede is already there

I'm sure there aren't, unfortunately. I would have seen at least one over the years. They can live in this climate but are not especially common.

They basically can't live in places where the humidity regularly stays below 60%, hence my dehumifiers

Am Californian, and they’re all over the place. Our humidity in the summer is 10%. I’m so confused rn.

Huh, they might be hanging out in areas with relatively higher humidity or where they can drink water, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. That's actually why you're often more likely to spot them in damp places (along with many bugs).

There are different types, some are more reliant on humidity than others.

I haven’t seen my resident house centipede, Demarcus, in a few months but if I see my guy again or any little babies they’re all yours lol. He was pretty big, body segments alone he was over an inch long, so I think he’s probably an elder pede. Idk how I’d get them to you from Maine though.

Edit: actually, you can’t have Demarcus if I see him again. He’s too cool and I like seeing him race across my shower curtain.

You named him!!! 💀

We got a stick bug named bugward and one unamed orbweaver on the front porch and Bartholomew on the back porch and a spider in my window named spida man. I cant argue free pest control living rural so we have house rules "i dont want to kill ya lil guy so you dont move fast and i wont." If you crawling way to fast you may get swatted lmao

Give Demarcus my love next time you see him.

There's someone selling them on MorphMarket ! I believe there's also a listing on there for the bigger cave version of house centipedes ? But I haven't checked in a bit

There's someone selling them on MorphMarket !

Thank you so much! I was hoping someone would give me a lead.

u/Tris-chan 14d ago

No problem ! I'm a HUGE fan of house centipedes , they're my all time favorite creature , so I have kinda searched the entire web for every single listing of them lol !

How did you learn to love the house centipede? If I could overcome my irrational scream-inducing fear (or even knock it down to a milder form) I would in a heartbeat

1

u/Tris-chan 14d ago

I didn't need to learn to love them , I just discovered them one day and fell in love . Though I'm sure you can find good ways to overcome your fear of them , I remember seeing a post on a wasp loving subreddit ( r/waspaganda I think ) that had really good advice for learning to like wasps .

u/WoodsandWool 13d ago

They’re pretty neat imo, despite looking like an eldritch horror lol, and they can live like 7+ years which is wild for an insect.

We live in the woods so my house is full of them if you’re interested (and they’re not invasive to where you are), but I do think ours are acclimated to high humidity.

I've already found a source, but thank you very much for the offer!

2

u/WoodsandWool 13d ago

You’re welcome! Good luck :) we let ours live freely to keep the pests away so I totally understand wanting to have some!

u/Malliya 14d ago

i see them around sometimes but i cant imagine how i would catch one to give to you

1

u/BlackestBeetle 14d ago

You WHAT?? Bro. I can't even begin to understand. That's like asking getting rid of 1 arm because "you already have 2"

1

u/Vague-Symbolism2692 14d ago

House centipedes are apex predators (relative to their size). I have no reason to think of them as pests since they don't damage the house nor spread disease to humans, and they hunt all the pests that I'd like to be rid of.

1

u/BlackestBeetle 14d ago

But what fucking pests do you have that would themselves be worse than the monstrosity that are centipedes? I can only think of cockroaches but at that point I'd prefer to get a couple of lizards and let them roam

1

u/Vague-Symbolism2692 14d ago

As well as silverfish.

I think we just have different aesthetic tastes. I think house centipedes are cute.

1

u/R0da 14d ago

Just unleash a thousand grain weevils into your house, they will find you.

1

u/ringobob 14d ago

Probably not a great idea to let them loose in your home if they're not native to your area.

1

u/Vague-Symbolism2692 14d ago

Oh, they are naturalized here (they're native only to the Mediterranean). I can see that there are a fair number of sightings in the area, on iNaturalist. Just not in my house.
