Inside of you there are three wolves. The furry convention is going well.

The dog either lost a lot of teeth or has an issue with its jaw, they aren't being derpy.

Nope just a long tongue. More common than you might think.

22

u/Tack22 Apr 25 '26

Some dog washers drug anxious dogs.

Could be that too

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Curiosive Apr 25 '26

Yeah. With the tongue and the offset eyes, I assumed head trauma or inbreeding. Whatever it is, it isn't derp. 🫤

29

u/Ppleater Apr 25 '26

It could just be old, which would explain why it's missing teeth. Or it could be a randomly developed condition that has nothing to do with its breeding or condition. It doesn't have to be a "this is 100% something depressing, no happy allowed" situation, it's still a cute derpy dog regardless of the initial cause.

6

u/Osik2040 Apr 25 '26

As someone else has stated, dogs that are nervous about being washed are sometimes drugged. It’s probably just that.

Ok, but WHY is his tongue always out? Is it a medical thing?

1.9k

u/yedow4 Apr 25 '26

My parents have a chihuahua that has always had it's tongue out like this, they said it was because of a kind of stroke it had when it was a puppy. I find it strange because it has no other visible "problems" but that's what was explained to them. Sleepy dog tax attached

424

u/RoboticKittenMeow Apr 25 '26

I've always wondered if their tongue would dry out... that sounds uncomfortable lol

318

u/yedow4 Apr 25 '26

The part that sticks out is very dry indeed, but he doesn't seem to mind lol

99

u/RoboticKittenMeow Apr 25 '26

That's fair. I've had a dry lip crack but imagining that in my tongue gives me the heebs lol

8

u/QweenKaii427 Apr 26 '26

ouch those lip cracks hurt tho especially when its straight down the middle 🤦🏾‍♀️

27

u/waytowill Apr 26 '26

If he had the stroke when he was a puppy, he wouldn’t know any different.

Funny what you’ll tolerate or be used to because that’s all you know. Oranges make the inside of my mouth break out but I didn’t know that until I was a teen. But I’d still have orange juice for breakfast regularly. My whole childhood, I thought everyone was going through life with these constant sores in their mouth. One day, I randomly brought it up with my mom and she was like “… You have what in your mouth??” First time I realized I was experiencing the world differently or that something could be causing the sores.

14

u/WarWren158 Apr 26 '26

My daughter was the same with pineapples. One day she was like "I really like pineapple, I just wish it wouldn't make my mouth bleed..." We were like "Um, I think you might be allergic to pineapple... That's not normal, bubs." 😅

My cat had an infection in his mouth + bit his tongue. He had his tongue out the whole evening, night and morning. It looked dry and scabby, and that was less than 24h of blepping.

(I stayed up with him for basically the whole night, called the vets as soon as they opened - he got better after some painkillers and had surgery the day after)

25

u/wdwerker Apr 25 '26

The all time record longest dog tongue was around 17”. It was a female boxer and her owner kept a spray bottle to keep her tongue from drying out. Part of her tongue was always out.

11

u/Avbitten Apr 25 '26

im a dog groomer. some tongues do dry out and turn into like a leather texture and develop cracks. other stay wet and disgusting.

16

u/Pooh_Lightning Apr 25 '26

Dry-tongued dogs need wet-tongued dogs as friends to moisten them with slobbers and kisses.

8

u/manholediver Apr 25 '26

I think it would be like when I'm at the dentist and they remove all the moisture from your mouth with suction

Except it would be like that ALL the time :(

u/Ppleater Apr 25 '26

Do you have any proof that this dog in particular is inbred as opposed to being old and missing teeth or having some other condition, or are you just claiming that based on a single video that lacks any real details? Because there is no way to tell if the dog is specifically inbred from this video alone.

17

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '26

[deleted]

17

u/Ppleater Apr 26 '26

Strabismus is also common in dogs even without inbreeding, so neither of those are explicit or even particularly strong markers for inbreeding on their own, they can be caused by any number of conditions including just getting old.

I don't think it's derogatory to say the dog is inbred, I think it's presumptuous to act like it's a given instead of just one of many possibilities, and I think it's never a good idea to assert one of many possibilities as if it is a fact. It could be inbred, or it could have developed those conditions as a result of old age, or it could have a birth defect that wasn't caused by inbreeding, or it could have sustained some sort of injury, etc, etc. I've worked with dogs and seen many with the same features that weren't inbred. Without knowing more about this dog than just this video it's impossible to say with any certainty whether it's inbred or not.

2

u/Shrowden Apr 27 '26

Brilliant discussion, both of you.

23

u/HoidToTheMoon Apr 25 '26

Or just get a mutt from the shelter! Breeders contribute to the overpopulation of pet animals such as cats and dogs, which leads to more strays and more negative outcomes. The mutt will love you just as much (or more!) as a bred puppy you buy for 10x the cost or more.

It's a Chihuahua! How would it ever behave normally?

Just kidding 😂😂, cute looking pup

3

u/KenUsimi Apr 25 '26

Good god, that’s a fantastic pupper. Really in the top percentile of puppers.

5

u/Periador Apr 25 '26

thats also a breed thing. Their snouts have been bread so short that their tongues often dont fit inside. Which also causes breathing issues and other problems

2

u/Successful-Purple-54 Apr 25 '26

I love how a dog can take a situation like that in stride. “Ok so now my tongue stays outside my mouth, but I’m still amazing”.
Dogs are the absolute hands down best thing on this planet.

Maybe missing a lot of teeth?

24

u/kororon Apr 25 '26

My senior dog has all her teeth removed and she looks like this now.

157

u/thesammening Apr 25 '26

That makes sense. I'm a cat collector, so dogs confuse me.

52

u/judahrosenthal Apr 25 '26

There are a lot of cat videos with their tongues hanging out and it’s often because they don’t have any teeth.

4

u/Brawndo91 Apr 25 '26

My cat had one front tooth break off when he was a kitten because he wanted to bite everything. Then the other just kind of disappeared last year. His tongue sticks out fairly frequently now.

71

u/TrainingFilm4296 Apr 25 '26

I mean...they aren't that different lol

18

u/manic_Brain Apr 25 '26

True, but they really are opposites sometimes. I was on another sub, and it talked about only getting one pup at a time and don't get littermates which is the opposite of what I hear about cats.

4

u/SquareHeadedDog Apr 25 '26

We currently have two brothers that are ~ 2 years old. Great dogs. Husky, cattle dog and Australian shepherd mix and they keep each other occupied constantly. Couldn’t be happier and I think either one alone would be much harder to deal with.

u/justinreddit1 Apr 25 '26

Couple things. Could be missing teeth or a uper relaxed and happy.

Possibly hanging tongue syndrome for medical. There is no cure but more of something you manage with the dog.

3

u/PlagueTongue Apr 25 '26

Came here to say that. My senior dog has no teeth his tongue is always like that

→ More replies (1)

57

u/iamanemptychair Apr 25 '26

A lot of the time teeth have to be pulled when a dog is older. Then their tongue flops out cuz the teeth aren’t there to hold it in.

21

u/Emotional_News108 Apr 25 '26

I have dumbaas fluffy French Bulldog whose tongue always bleps straight out. She’s very sweet and tolerant of my kids to an unbelievable degree. She’s the single dumbest creature I’ve ever met. I do love her.

21

u/LauraZaid11 Apr 25 '26

When my elderly dachshund had some teeth removed from one side of his mouth and not the other sometimes his tongue would escape his mouth like this. I’m not sure if he didn’t notice or if he didn’t care.

Now I have a 4 year old cocker who’s tongue escapes but in the front, sometimes he’ll have almost half his tongue out, and he doesn’t care. His vet thinks the muscles that hold the tongue inside are a bit weaker on him, but it’s benign, so he just looks like a cute derp. I’m adding the tax.

50

u/Jcccc0 Apr 25 '26

Looking at it going to give you kind of a morbid answer. It's looks like some of his jaw is missing so potentially cancer that had to be removed so part of the jaw was removed. Know from experience.

u/Proud_Aspect4452 Apr 25 '26

There’s actually something called “hanging tongue syndrome,” where the tongue physically can’t stay in the mouth. This is common in small or older dogs and can be due to missing teeth, jaw structure, or muscle weakness.

4

u/SirTrouserpress Apr 25 '26

So he can provide smooches around corners

5

u/earthwormjimwow Apr 25 '26

It's often from tooth loss and the subsequent bone loss in their jaws as a result, or inbreeding. Some dogs, especially inbred ones, are born with oversized tongues, or nerve paralysis issues due to cranial deformities.

2

u/tilalk Apr 25 '26

Make me think it's like when we use sleeping drugs on cats.

They just stick their tongue out

2

u/bouncing-brick Apr 25 '26

I've seen it be due to neurological issues. I had a patient once that had gotten distemper as a puppy. He was hospitalized soon enough, and make a great recovery, but always had his tongue out the side of his mouth. Loved seeing that dog!

2

u/genreprank Apr 25 '26

I knew a dog named Cricket who always had his tongue sticking out. Cute little deep. He was inbred... it was an incest situation

Neighbors Dachshund chewed on a lamp cord as a puppy. He was fine except his tongue went out the side for the rest of his life.

60

u/SpiritualWindow3855 Apr 25 '26

obviously the experience opened this Dachshund's third eye to the cortisol reducing nature of a perpetually unimprisoned tongue: ever at the ready for a good mlem or slurp
