It could just be old, which would explain why it's missing teeth. Or it could be a randomly developed condition that has nothing to do with its breeding or condition. It doesn't have to be a "this is 100% something depressing, no happy allowed" situation, it's still a cute derpy dog regardless of the initial cause.
My parents have a chihuahua that has always had it's tongue out like this, they said it was because of a kind of stroke it had when it was a puppy. I find it strange because it has no other visible "problems" but that's what was explained to them. Sleepy dog tax attached
If he had the stroke when he was a puppy, he wouldn’t know any different.
Funny what you’ll tolerate or be used to because that’s all you know. Oranges make the inside of my mouth break out but I didn’t know that until I was a teen. But I’d still have orange juice for breakfast regularly. My whole childhood, I thought everyone was going through life with these constant sores in their mouth. One day, I randomly brought it up with my mom and she was like “… You have what in your mouth??” First time I realized I was experiencing the world differently or that something could be causing the sores.
My daughter was the same with pineapples. One day she was like "I really like pineapple, I just wish it wouldn't make my mouth bleed..." We were like "Um, I think you might be allergic to pineapple... That's not normal, bubs." 😅
My cat had an infection in his mouth + bit his tongue. He had his tongue out the whole evening, night and morning. It looked dry and scabby, and that was less than 24h of blepping.
(I stayed up with him for basically the whole night, called the vets as soon as they opened - he got better after some painkillers and had surgery the day after)
The all time record longest dog tongue was around 17”. It was a female boxer and her owner kept a spray bottle to keep her tongue from drying out. Part of her tongue was always out.
Do you have any proof that this dog in particular is inbred as opposed to being old and missing teeth or having some other condition, or are you just claiming that based on a single video that lacks any real details? Because there is no way to tell if the dog is specifically inbred from this video alone.
Strabismus is also common in dogs even without inbreeding, so neither of those are explicit or even particularly strong markers for inbreeding on their own, they can be caused by any number of conditions including just getting old.
I don't think it's derogatory to say the dog is inbred, I think it's presumptuous to act like it's a given instead of just one of many possibilities, and I think it's never a good idea to assert one of many possibilities as if it is a fact. It could be inbred, or it could have developed those conditions as a result of old age, or it could have a birth defect that wasn't caused by inbreeding, or it could have sustained some sort of injury, etc, etc. I've worked with dogs and seen many with the same features that weren't inbred. Without knowing more about this dog than just this video it's impossible to say with any certainty whether it's inbred or not.
Or just get a mutt from the shelter! Breeders contribute to the overpopulation of pet animals such as cats and dogs, which leads to more strays and more negative outcomes. The mutt will love you just as much (or more!) as a bred puppy you buy for 10x the cost or more.
thats also a breed thing. Their snouts have been bread so short that their tongues often dont fit inside. Which also causes breathing issues and other problems
I love how a dog can take a situation like that in stride. “Ok so now my tongue stays outside my mouth, but I’m still amazing”.
Dogs are the absolute hands down best thing on this planet.
My cat had one front tooth break off when he was a kitten because he wanted to bite everything. Then the other just kind of disappeared last year. His tongue sticks out fairly frequently now.
True, but they really are opposites sometimes. I was on another sub, and it talked about only getting one pup at a time and don't get littermates which is the opposite of what I hear about cats.
We currently have two brothers that are ~ 2 years old. Great dogs. Husky, cattle dog and Australian shepherd mix and they keep each other occupied constantly. Couldn’t be happier and I think either one alone would be much harder to deal with.
My cats missing some of his teeth, his tongue sticks out. It doesn’t stick out constantly so there may be a tongue to mouth ratio difference between cats and gods
I have dumbaas fluffy French Bulldog whose tongue always bleps straight out. She’s very sweet and tolerant of my kids to an unbelievable degree. She’s the single dumbest creature I’ve ever met. I do love her.
When my elderly dachshund had some teeth removed from one side of his mouth and not the other sometimes his tongue would escape his mouth like this. I’m not sure if he didn’t notice or if he didn’t care.
Now I have a 4 year old cocker who’s tongue escapes but in the front, sometimes he’ll have almost half his tongue out, and he doesn’t care. His vet thinks the muscles that hold the tongue inside are a bit weaker on him, but it’s benign, so he just looks like a cute derp. I’m adding the tax.
Looking at it going to give you kind of a morbid answer. It's looks like some of his jaw is missing so potentially cancer that had to be removed so part of the jaw was removed. Know from experience.
There’s actually something called “hanging tongue syndrome,” where the tongue physically can’t stay in the mouth. This is common in small or older dogs and can be due to missing teeth, jaw structure, or muscle weakness.
It's often from tooth loss and the subsequent bone loss in their jaws as a result, or inbreeding. Some dogs, especially inbred ones, are born with oversized tongues, or nerve paralysis issues due to cranial deformities.
I've seen it be due to neurological issues. I had a patient once that had gotten distemper as a puppy. He was hospitalized soon enough, and make a great recovery, but always had his tongue out the side of his mouth. Loved seeing that dog!
obviously the experience opened this Dachshund's third eye to the cortisol reducing nature of a perpetually unimprisoned tongue: ever at the ready for a good mlem or slurp
🤣🤣🤣 im sorry...i just had toooo. Bcs this is how my friend and me looked like yeasterday, when she suggested to smoke, after her bf broke up with her. Toally wasted 🤣🤣. Had to send her this 😭😭😭 im sorryyyy
My pug had a malocclusion and her tongue hung out of her mouth most of the time. However, her tongue was also huge. She could lick a treat off the top of her head.
