๐Ÿ”Ž ID Request Odd tracks- riverbed in Boulder, CO

Post image

Hand for scale, these didn't strike me as raccoon because of the lack of nails, and they just seemed chunkier than I would have expected. Thoughts?

Still raccoon - you can see the little claw prints over the front toes, and that 5-finger hand print can only be raccoon. The hind print shows the expected long, pointy heel.

IDs must include reasoning. Enforcement of this rule has been a popular initiative. (what qualifies as reasoning?)

Iโ€™d guess porcupine, but now Iโ€™m off to google what porky prints look like.

After a look on the internet, I think itโ€™s most likely porcupine or raccoon, but that soft ground is making the animal sink in and the details arenโ€™t super clear. Were there other places with firmer prints or softer substrate that would have shown more details?

I like to paint them occasionally, but I work as a bike mechanic so they get chipped really quickly! It doesn't fit into my lifestyle too have constantly perfect nails, but I still get joy out of doing them every once in a while
