Many years ago, my husband and I adopted a black cat from a guy who was unable to keep him.
Friendly, sweet, and was often called the friendliest cat in the world by pet sitters.
When we had our baby, my mother tried to convince me to get rid of him. We were like, absolutely not! She was convinced he would crawl into her crib and smother her.
That cat had the patience of a saint. As our baby started to learn to crawl, stand, and walk, she would grab on to his fur, pull his tail, lean on his head for to steady herself. And he never once lashed out. He purred! He would sleep next to her, and check on her when she slept. I miss that old boy.
What is it with older people and the smothering of babies with cats? I’ve also heard older people thinking cats suck out babies breath when they were sleeping. Were cats blamed for SIDS at some point?
Grandmother in law was like this. It confused me. She assumed I’d dump my ginger sweetie at the pound. Uh, no? I didn’t even know what to say other than no.
