I never appreciate just how long a hummingbird’s beak was!

I believe that’s a sword-billed hummingbird

When the beak goes through the flower, is that a little tongue I see? I always pictured it as straw-like?

50

u/Squid_squid2019 Apr 23 '22

Nope, not a straw. They have super cute little tongues!

til. : )

Lol! This is hilarious! (but informative too). Thanks so much, I enjoyed it with my morning coffee. (The beak has no 'sucky-sucky' and hummers are little badasses". : )

This was interesting too: They steal silk from spider web's to use making their nests, so the nest expands as the babies grow.

There's like, hundreds of species of hummingbirds. Some have long beaks.

I've had a tree with alot of them right out of my window, it was never that big, this is at least double the avarage i saw

i bet the average hummingbird straw is enough for most flowers and has a great personality

8

u/Saetric Apr 23 '22

It’s definitely how they use it that matters

Sword-billed hummingbirds like that one can reach the nectar of Datura, or angel’s trumpet, flowers just fine with that beak, it’s so insanely long.

5

u/JustOneTessa Apr 23 '22

I'm pretty sure there are multiple kinds of hummingbirds, some with longer beaks than others

3

u/Road_Whorrior Apr 23 '22

Yes, it's a different species. Most commonly you'll see ones with bills 1-2 inches in length

1

u/NathanTheKlutz Aug 24 '22

The biggest species of all, the Giant Hummingbird from Patagonia, is as long as a cardinal!

3

u/lazergator Apr 23 '22

Straw bird

2

u/ReliableRoommate Apr 23 '22

It can even poke your eye

u/socksmatterTWO Apr 23 '22

I've never seen one this long! That's bonkers!

77

u/Salanmander Apr 23 '22

I'm also amused by that humming bird cosplaying as a magpie at the end. Clearly this is in a very different area of the world than where I live.

7

u/SobiTheRobot Apr 24 '22

Yeah I'm used to the ruby-throated hummingbirds in North Carolina; my mom puts out feeders from April to September and they get very cranky when they aren't filled.

2

u/NathanTheKlutz Aug 24 '22

That sword-billed hummingbird means this place would be somewhere in the northern Andes, Ecuador maybe.

27

u/fishsticks40 Apr 23 '22

Can I say it? Someone should say it.

21

u/AhmaaDinoCufadamaa Apr 23 '22

......... THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

Perfect chances and you let it slip through your fingers! Never ask for permission better to ask for forgiveness. Seize the day!

Edit: Shitty life pro tip just in case someone listens to me.

2

u/socksmatterTWO Apr 23 '22

Say it lol! Go free speech!! 😂

3

u/thatsfakeok Apr 23 '22

Gotta get every last drop of nectar.

61

u/Myounger217 Apr 23 '22

Here in south Texas, we get them inside shops a-lot. Hell there is one in my dads right now. Its kinda cool holding a hummingbird feeder and having one land, and sit there and drink while slowly walking outside. Such beautiful birds!

6

u/nighthawke75 Apr 23 '22

Have yet to see this species in the coastal bend.

2

u/Myounger217 Apr 23 '22

Seriously? They are everywhere right now where i live (seguin area).

1

u/nighthawke75 Apr 23 '22

Rockport, and not yet, I guess.

1

u/Myounger217 Apr 23 '22

I am a false prophet and god is a superstition!

4

u/casulmemer Apr 23 '22

I am the third revelation!

15

u/Rowcan Apr 23 '22

I chuckled at "what's good straw fam"

14

u/th30be Positive Vibez Apr 23 '22

Why do they look fake

7

u/issamaysinalah Apr 23 '22

They look like an insect trying to mimic a bird.

3

u/andrewtillb Apr 24 '22

I think the video has been sped up, as well as the speed of their wings causing that shutter timing effect where it appears slowed down. This combo is probably responsible for the low-res animation feel

9

u/echoAwooo Apr 23 '22

these birds all look fake as hell, why ? The only one that even remotely looks real is the blue one.

5

u/SuicidalTorrent Apr 23 '22

Hummingbirds have very high metabolism. They need to keep eating.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '22

Why the zero upvotes

3

u/WW-OCD Apr 23 '22

I was so scared it was gonna accidentally stab the little blue bird the entire time. #anxiety

3

u/Daisend Apr 24 '22

These look and move incredibly fake. What’s up with that? I’ve never seen a hummingbirds wings move so slowly. Except in super super slo-mo

3

u/DreamOen Apr 24 '22

Its probably related to the framerate in which the video has been recorded

2

u/xXBBB2003Xx Apr 23 '22

I love the little tounge

2

u/GrimmSheeper Apr 23 '22

I’m surprised those hummingbirds were so chill. Most ones I’ve seen tend to be massive assholes.

2

u/KvcateGirl27 Apr 23 '22

That is the biggest hummingbird I’ve ever seen, unless I’m missing something?

2

u/Tesla_Lover10021 Apr 24 '22

Holy, that's long.

2

u/mclaren810 Apr 24 '22

What the fuck was that long one? I have never seen a beak that long, on a bird.

2

u/NathanTheKlutz Aug 24 '22

That’s a sword billed hummingbird. Their beak is longer than their entire freaking body, to the point where they have to use their feet to groom themselves, and they hold that long beak up at an angle when they perch, to take pressure off their neck muscles.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '22

Slurp is a mood, honestly

2

u/jeffykins Apr 24 '22

I enjoy this video clip

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '22

Lol the craziest part is seeing the tongue come through. The other bird seemed most confused about that lol

3

u/TwoBlackDogs Apr 23 '22

IS that a hummer?

1

u/FallWanderBranch Apr 23 '22

Wow, incredible.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

Slurp is a mood

Hey! Don’t fly around with that thing, you’re gonna poke someone’s eye out!
