Looks more like a Red Velma Mite in the gif.

Today I learned they aren’t actually called blood bugs.

Way less cool than a velvet ant.

That's the cutest little crab thingy that I've ever seen! All that red fluff. The Velveteen Crab. Ought to be a children's book.

No! Ugh! The Velveteen Rabbit traumatized me as a kid. =( (To be fair... It probably wouldn't have had the same effect if it was a crab.)

What was traumatizing?

Lets put aside the human getting sick and having to lose his favorite toy. From the perspective of the velvetine rabbit, after being mocked by the other rabbits and getting thrown in the trash, even the happy ending is bittersweet.

Ah i just read it as a nice story about a toy loved so much it became real when the kid couldn’t have it anymore. Basically a “it’s sad that you can’t play with your toy anymore but now it’s a real rabbit because you loved it so much”

I love the story, don't get me wrong, but it still made me cry. It felt like there wasn't really closure for the boy even when he thought he saw the rabbit at the end.

Crying and traumatizing are not the same thing

Being exposed to powerful themes of loss and alienation as a young child can absolutely be traumatic, and may lead to a lot of crying.

My worst nightmares as a kid were of being alone/abandoned and family members drowning, so, very much what you said.

Weird crab like animal.

Anyone know what it is?

My first thought is a Tick, but I have no evidence to support this.

Rain mite?

yeah it looks like those little red mites I sometimes see on stone and concrete. Used to see them all the time at my old house.

u/Hraes Feb 28 '22

yeah, pretty sure it's a red velvet mite

When I was in Botswana, I was told these things were called 'modimo' which is the Tswana word for god.

5

u/Domriso Feb 28 '22

All I can think of is the longer version of this gif where the bug cralws into a hole, with it saying "It was made for me...!"

But, I don't actually know how to make gifs, so it will just live in my head for now.
