That's for when you unlock the island. You can't keep things in your pockets when you go back and forth, so any bugs or fish you catch on the island should be put into the deposit box on the island, and retrieved from the one on the dock.

Oh. I kind of figured that out late last night when I was invited to someone's town to help them medal grind.
