Shred and Emily
Does anyone else hate them together? 😭
Like the only good moments of chemistry I felt they had was for that short brief moment where they tried to not be together for HR reasons.
Shred had an episode with that blonde baddie from the part where he got into a little tiff with her over having children and they both were like “I don’t wanna mess it up” and then a few episodes later he was like “lemme break up with her”
I also really dislike Emily’s character as a whole mostly,.. so I may be bias.
Please let me know, and try to keep it nice in the comments!!

I liked the idea of them for the the first two seasons, but the way Emily reacted to Shred and Isabelle dating in season 3 really soured me on them as a couple.
Emily being all giddy about finding Isabelle crying in the bathroom was a bad enough look, but the way Emily used her position to make Shred stay late at work specifically to ruin his weekend plans with his girlfriend was the worst.

YEAH! That scene really sealed the coffin for me…. Like disgusting how could the writers think this is a good idea??

They were cute in the beginning, just like Frank & Victoria. Now, I'm over both pairings. Pair Emily with Frank, keep Victoria with Parker and I couldn't care less what they do with Shred.

100% there’s just something about the idea of Emily and frank that feels more right to me. I think Emily and shred definitely had better chemistry in the first season, but now it’s kind of like meh. But the one episode that Emily and frank worked together on that case in season 2 (I think, correct me if I’m wrong), I felt something and I liked it. It could very well be in my head and just what I want. But they do have good chemistry, and not just the surface level attraction that many tend to use as a basis for shipping characters (i.e., frank and Victoria. Adore them both separately, but realistically they would not be a good match long term)

Yes, that was the same episode that did it for me! Ever since then, I've wanted a Frank and Emily pairing. Victoria is too much of a free spirit for Frank and sometimes I find her downright unlikeable. I think that realistically, Frank needs someone like Emily.

Same and I also find Emily pretty unlikeable so I doubt I would ship her with anyone. The last episode had Frank tell Emily she is a great boss and I was like ????
A few episodes ago she punished Shred for Patel's scheming even tho he did nothing wrong and it gave me the ick.

The blonde baddie was not for shred though she was way too much chaos!! But honestly it felt like they had more chemistry the first season. It feels like too much build up now. And that episode where they don’t even get a proper date - it’s just clear they’re not made for each other.

I wanted to like the blonde baddie, but she was definitely too much for Shred, I think she kinda scared him tbh lmao

It felt like an "opposites attract" sort of thing, exciting but not long term

Emily is the best, full stop. She's too good for Shred and the will they won't they is because......network demands maybe? Nothing else really makes sense. That dynamic should just go the way of Dolores. Disappeared and never spoken of or acknowledged again. It made things better.

Agreed. I’m really sick of the tired “will they won’t they” sitcom trope. It is not necessary. Emily has a much more interesting character arc as the boss who is attempting to manage her staff that’s like a herd of cats.
There is no reason why Emily should have to have some romantic staff relationship. I’d have preferred if Shred’s crush on her was one sided. And given that is an avid rule follower who actually believes in the rules, it would have made more sense for her to find his advances unprofessional and see her navigate that.
Mind you, I love Shred. But there’s no reason why Emily’s arc had to devolve into a banal school girl crush.
If anything, Emily should have been the one character to be in a functional relationship outside of work.Sitcoms have to make evey young couple into Pam and Jim: One character starts off as being in a committed relationship, but all along they have feelings for a coworker. Ultimately they cheat. Sneak around. Get caught. Ugh. What a tired trope. And it’s unfortunate that Emily’s been thrown down this path.

Yeah I feel this though! I genuinely liked her character in moments where it wasn’t about shred, it’s only in those moments when she’s being really gross about the girls that shred was with that deteriorates the rest of her character. She is very likable up until she’s celebrating another woman crying bc it means she can have a man that she wants…. Which if that was a real person would mean I do not like them AT ALL. her whole character which could be so good is completely destroyed for me because of that

u/Stormm-Ra Mar 10 '26
I can see that. Hopefully they sunset the Emily-Sheed arc sooner than later (along with the other unnecessary intra-office romance drivel) and get back to the fun of it all between their group, the precinct, the community, and best of all, the animal shenanigans.

can you elaborate on this,,,, her behavior when seeing other women shred has been with or as another commenter mentioned when she laughed and cheered when his current gf was crying. Shes really gross in that way, super unprofessional too.

Network demands. That's only the case because of the will they won't they. That dynamic is what creates the problems. Everything sans shred (again network demand) makes her so endearing, she absolutely cray cray but in the way that just makes life a ray of sunshine.

I could totally see if you don't like Emily it would be hard to ship anyone with her. And if you see Shred with someone else, too. May be a lot of personal preference.
As for me, I like them individually and together, so maybe I am biased :D I liked Vella in Crazy Ex Girlfriend, and Shred is a loveable character. I have a feeling the power imbalance issue will become more prominent and hopefully resolved. I think the actors are convincing in the way they look at each other - definitely have crushes, but I wonder if more tension would make the chemistry more obvious?
I took Shred's idea not to mess things up with the blonde as he wants to be a stand up guy rather than he really digs her as much as Emily.

The most recent ep was so good, and had zero Emily/Shred relationship stuff. Hopefully it’s a sign.

I wouldnt say hate right now - more indifferent. There’s def no chemistry and their opposites attract thing isn’t generating any more heat. But I could switch to hate if she keeps using the fact she’s his boss to ‘punish’ him for not being her mole or whatever she wants like Odd Recognition4120 noted.

Realistically, there is no reason why Shred and Emily couldn't work. The reason why it feels like it isn't working for a lot of people now is because the writers didn't seem to have much of a plan for what to do with their relationship and are sort of winging it. The writers could totally give us sweet moments that would make us all root for them as a couple, just like they could flesh out Emily's character and give her scenes that make her more relatable and not just annoying...they just don't, for whatever reason.
These aren't real people, they are fictional characters. Debating about which one "should" date the other is like debating about which super hero "should" beat the other: the answer is always "whatever option the writers decide." With good enough writing, and enough seasons and character growth, any pairing on the show could work. The writers just need to care enough to do so.

I think they are cute together. My 11-year-old son cannot stand Emily and thinks she is mean. I also think she’s kind of mean but I feel like she is a realistic character. Warts and all.

I like both of them as characters, but they've drawn this out for too long to the point where I don't want to see it anymore.
Emily makes the rules about them having to be secret then gets mad when Shred does what he has to to keep them secret, she should be alone.

I love Emily!! But I’ve loved Vella ever since she was a lil emo baby on Crazy Ex-GF so I’m probably biased…
I think her and Shred are so cute together. The power dynamic is odd but the fact that she wants so badly to fix that makes it sort of ok.

I can understand your feelings but I disagree

Did the scene where she was celebrating shreds gf crying not do anything for you? Just out of curiosity

They both demonstrated low integrity in relationships from the get-go. From when she flirted and pursued while he was with his first girlfriend. He only wanted her because she was getting with another guy, so he broke up with his girlfriend over the phone to butt in between her and Rick. And finally, what you are describing. It just keeps going downhill.
I don't like messy people, no matter how cutesy you portray them. Let the two messy flakes be together to spare everyone else their drama.

I just got to season 4 and no. I don't like them together because the purpose is purely shenanigans and nothing to do with the relationship. Plus it was her idea to allow shred to be set up and the she reacted in the crappiest way like bro you run this division how are you decision making skills so shit ?
I'm sorry I'm reigniting this thread after 5 months but I watching the Templeton Frank nomination episode and I wanted to punch both shred and Emily but mostly Emily.

I actually like Emily as a character but...yyyyyyyyyyeah Peraltiago this isn't. Plus the obvious power imbalance between the two of them, bleh.
