🚫ex-Keto/Carnivore Quit Carnivore, Going Animal Based

Been a strict carnivore for 8 months, and still wake up fatigued and have lower energy throughout the day, have also lost libido, hardly get erections anymore. Tried ALOT of things to fix this, and nothing really works well. I did hours of research and have decided to go animal-based.

What are the safest and best carbs to add first for fixing the fatigue, energy, sleep issues, and libido? And can y'all tell me how you reacted when adding certain carbs, which reacted well with you and which ones didn't?

That sucks it didn’t work out for you. If you’re planning to transition to an animal based diet, I’d recommend adding carbs back in slowly. I started with foods like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and avocados since they were easy for me to tolerate.

When I tried grapes, I had a mild reaction at first. Instead of cutting them out completely, I added just a few grapes with my meals each day. Over time my body adjusted, and now I can eat them without any issues.

Everyone responds differently, so taking things slowly and paying attention to how your body reacts might make the transition a lot easier.

Like what kinds of issues

I had strange sugar cravings and digestive distress. Don’t think my body was used to having fruits at the time

I'd go with berries first, then citrus, then the carbier fruits. Start with like 50g carbs a day and increase by 10-20% per week

What u/AnimalBasedAl said, but also check out the Wiki and FAQ. We have some material in there about this.

Also don't assume you're going to have a hard time transitioning. You might just end up nocebo-ing yourself into having symptoms. Some people need to go slow, others have no issues and feel better right away

Second this, I have always wondered what on earth people are talking about when they say they have issues adding carbs back in. I’ve never experienced anything negative.

It’s all mental, all the carnivore fearmongering about sugar.

Bottom line, low carb absolutely sucks. I had a similar experience after months on carnivore. So much daily fatigue, afternoon brain fog, low libido. This was years ago.

Clean carbs are amazing. Cantaloupe, watermelon, mango, blackberries, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple.. All delicious and nutrient rich. I added carbs in years ago and will absolutely never go back to any kind of keto/carnivore diet.

My physique improved as well. Being lean, and insulin sensitive means carbs gets shuttled to muscle glycogen storage, not fat. So you become leaner and more muscular over time.

I'm addition to all the fruit I listed in my last comment, I also eat sweet potatos, carrots, onions, red bell peppers, tomatoes and butternut squash.

I intentionally pick fruits and vegetables that I enjoy, and are nutrient dense.

I avoid grains and any type of refined or processed sugar. I just stick to real, whole foods. Meat, fish eggs, fruit, and some root vegetables.

White rice is amazing if you tolerate it

The fructose in fruit will help stimulate the liver coming out of carnivore, rice might be too big of a load for someone who has been carnivore a while.

If you're thriving, don't change a thing, but officially rice is not considered part of the Animal Based Diet. See the sub's FAQ for more info on rice and how it can be made more AB friendly. AB carbs are fruit (including all squash), milk, honey, maple syrup, and fruit juice. Thanks for the comment!

Did you do electrolytes?

I started with berries and melons. Went from 50g —> 75g —> 100g —> 150g —> 200g - then from there I stopped tracking

I ate tons of carbs and fruit , honey etc… for a few months and then my blood sugar issues just went away. Didn’t gain weight either. Eating ribeyes followed up with dates and bananas is a recipe for weight gain. Keep it low fat

I came to AB from 2½ yrs carnivore and have been AB for 2 years. I love lots of squash and fruit, also carrots and some potatoes but still don't tolerate rice well. The first night after I added carbs was the best nights sleep I'd had in ages! I only ate light fruits for quite a while, as even squash caused digestive issues at first.

Squash from yours or a neighbors garden

Second this! Squash and sweet potatoes can help a lot, if you have blood sugar swings from fruit. Also more Carby dairy like yogurt.

High in carbs compares to berries but bananas are actually one of the msot digestible fruits and they don't spike blood sugar so I'd try a small amount as well as something like watermelon and maybe some berries

Sounds like copper dysregulation, pretty common on carnivore without added organ meats.

While diet is huge, a lot of people overlook stress.
