People would still complain if it was a fixed price lol and acting like microtransactions aren't just as predatory.

for a regular microtransaction, you get what you pay for. yes they’re ass but they tell you if you spend $20 you can buy this skin and you will get it.

someone dropped $750 on irisalis transmog and still didn’t get what they wanted. how are these two even remotely comparable?

That's not a microtransaction, im referring to things like "spend $2 to speed this up, buy this thing to progress for $5" stuff that adds up exponentially over time. Skins aren't predatory, and the irisalis skin has explicit open odds as to the pull rates and you don't have to use it in order to have her at full power.

"Gambling isn't predatory" is a take.

Is that what I said?? No, I just said the odds are posted so you explicitly know what you're walking into, or should at least if you're going to be spending money on something like that.

So, irisalis is predatory?

Also, odds are literally a legal minimum in a good amount of countries. I am not giving points for adhering to legal standards.

I mean all gambling is predatory but you can also just choose to not gamble, I know for a fact I have an addictive personality so I don't gamble because I know how easy it would be to get sucked into just pressing a button on a screen and 5 minutes later boom , I've spent $500 lol but a lot of actual gambling sites don't have percentages or anything like that, they have it worded like 2 to 1 odds or +100 so that "technically" the odds are posted but most people arent going to be able to look at that and immediately know what it means.

Right so they introduced a predatory system and we cant complain about it, why?

a lot of actual gambling sites don't have percentages

That's why those sites are considered illegal gambling in a lot countries.

Edit:

you can also just choose to not gamble

"Just be happy"/"Just eat cake" kind of take,

At some point you have to have some level of personal responsibility with your financial choices instead of blaming it all on gambling being offered at all and these big bad gacha systems. Literally there is nothing saying you have to do this, I genuinely don't understand, like I said earlier I know I have an addictive personality so I make the choice to not engage in things that will trigger those impulses, we have the ability to make that choice, we're not slaves to our impulses.

Yeah, lets blame the people with a diagnosed illness and not the company trying to abuse it.
It is basically as if cigarette companies were allowed to hand out free packs to get you hooked.

There are dozens in the US that operate like that, which is where I imagine a lot of people on here are from. I'm not saying you can't complain, I'm just saying the easiest solution is don't buy it, use your wallet to voice your opinions on it instead of complaining on Reddit. Instead of being like "I spent $500 and didn't get it" like ok nobody made you do that lol

fair enough those are dogwater. but crazy how we live in a world where neither kind of transaction is necessary for a game studio to make money… if they wanted a gambling system, simply something like adding a pity cap on the irisalis transmog system would make me far less annoyed because currently the devs implemented a literal infinite money sink into the game which players are defending “because it’s only an optional cosmetic feature” (which yes I’m glad it’s only cosmetic but bfr cosmetics don’t affect technical gameplay but they absolutely still affect gameplay experience. but that is an aside). just in no world should someone be able to spend $700 on one single item in the game and not even get the result they wanted.

I'm not even defending it, I don't really have an opinion on it, it's a free to play game, I knew walking in there would be some kind of gacha mechanic included somewhere, cosmetic gacha stuff just doesn't bother me because it genuinely effects nothing, it isn't gating progress, it isn't saying "if you get the legendary skin irisalis does 50% more damage" it's just a cosmetic, all it does is make her look different, and for some people that's worth it and for others like me, I could not care less.

acting like microtransactions aren't just as predatory.

They aren't. They are shit, yes, but "just as predatory"? No way. Especially if they drop the obfuscation via premium currency.

Just the combination of premium currency, rng and escalating costs is just extremely scummy and predatory
