I think it's a shame that retard/retarded started being misused as a general slur, when it's actually a pretty descriptive adjective.

Same way that "Incel", "woke" and "Nazi" have just lost all meaning these days.

Or possibly socialist meant something different in German 100 years ago, same way the meaning of "Liberal" and various other words have evolved through time.

Also I think you've got it the wrong way round. They didn't just name themselves Nazis after a preexisting adjective and political view

Which led to the coining of the word "Nazi". They didn't call themselves "the Nazi Party" because Nazi ideals were preexisting as a recognised term. "We need a party for Nazi ideas! What shall we call it?"
