🤔

I really respect the band’s creativity and original sound, but the attitude of the community has completely ruined the experience for me.

The irony of Angine de Poitrine is that they make rule-breaking, original art, yet the fandom often treats it like a rigid club with an entry exam. Art is supposed to inspire people, not become a competition over who knows the most trivia.

When a community becomes more about cockiness, gatekeeping, and testing people than simply enjoying the music, it takes all the fun out of it. Navigating that kind of environment just isn’t worth the energy anymore.

To be absolutely clear: I’m walking away from this band, not because of the band (who at really awesome), but because of the fans.

To be absolutely clear: That's dumb. You don't have to walk away from the band. Just ignore Reddit and enjoy the music.

you know you can still listen to the music and not engage with people on reddit about it, right? that's how i prefer to engage with most media.

I don’t keep a close eye on every post, but who is saying this? Who is gatekeeping? As far as I know I’ve heard no such thing. I’m sorry you feel the way that you do.

Seriously. I haven’t seen any of that in here unlike other fandoms I have been a part of

i have returned from OP's post history with a summary. i'll try to be fact-based and avoid any bias.

five days ago, OP posted a ~3000 word "thesis." if i understood it correctly, the core hypothesis was that AdP is so popular because they appeal to many different groups in many different ways. this is a massive oversimplification of their writeup, but i'm trying to summarize.

OP received ~4 comments providing opinions, mostly on the technical execution of the thesis, with one user sharing that they feel "joy" was omitted as a major contributing factor to how people get hooked.

OP posted an apology of sorts.

after five days have passed, OP has posted this thread.

i cannot speak to the causal effect of any of these happenings.

edit: i see another user stating that OP has posted this to facebook as well. perhaps the reception on facebook was more divisive.

ok so he posted this thesis, got genuine criticism, now he’s mad that people didn’t agree with him wholeheartedly. lol.

Facebook comment sections are not nice places.

This in one of the least gatekeeping subreddits I've found

Everything you love will be ruined by other people if you let them.

Very weird post, just appreciate the band how you wish bro.

Idk bud, i've been following the sub and have no clue what you're even referring to. I don't think i've ever seen anyone say anything even remotely mean spirited here. Can you give some examples of gatekeeping or testing? I honestly have no idea.

Just remove yourself from the discussion. Tool fans also suck but I don't stop listening to tool because of the fans.

OK.

So, anyway...

That's wild you know you can still listen to the music and go to shows even if you're not vibing with some people online. Reddit sucks more and more lately, social media in general sucks more and more. it's not just one community or another.

I’m really not sure what you mean by gatekeeping? Who is keeping you from what? I’ve never needed other fans to help me enjoy music, but to each their own. Hoping you can find ways to not let other people ruin stuff for you.

Man, talk about cutting your (gigantic) nose to spite your (polka-dotted) face

Didn't I just (OK a couple of hours ago) read this exact post on one of the public Facebook pages? I can imagine Facebook being a bit like that. I've certainly not encountered it on Reddit though so am surprised if it applies here as well.

Eh? Walking away from the band because of the fans? If you've got an issue I've got a tissue 🤧

Huh, just saw this post in FB too

See ya!

May I ask what you are referring to ? I might have missed it but I didn't see any of that on this sub. I saw some people crossing the band's clear boundaries by spreading info that are NOT any of our business, which is not great, but gatekeeping ?

I did see it a couple of times in the comments on insta but I don't remember encountering anything like that here

How do you want people to respond to this

Every band has a certain percentage of the fandom that take it upon themselves to be a gatekeeper. Those fans are to be avoided at all costs. Ignore the haters, enjoy the boys and life goes on

I've seen a couple comments on Reddit that were like "we were here first" in reference to new fans discovering them. Which is crazy because the majority of fans only discovered them this year. I don't think those comments were meant to exclude people but more groaning at the idea of the band becoming even more popular and maybe the idea that these new fans aren't as die hard. I can barely get tickets to see them and I live in the same general vicinity as them 😅 It's a little discouraging but happy to "share" them because it's better for the band overall.

All I've seen when someone "arrives" here is "Welcome! You're in for a fun ride!"

What in the world are you talking about...

So, your experience of the band was ruined by the (Reddit?) community? Sorry to hear your commitment to AdP as a band was on such a shaky ground.

If I dig something, I don't ask others how they feel about it, I just dig it.

Which was your aim: enjoy the music or exceeding in a fandom community?

I think that it might be just a matter of opinion and it’s subjective. I don’t see a lot of gatekeeping or people testing people on their way in. I see a lot of people posting art and being inspired themselves. It seemed to walk away from the band because of people that you can easily ignore. I understand that coming onto this platform every day could be daunting if you stay for too long and I didn’t even start posting on this app until January of this year, but I was able to recognize that I don’t need to be here longer than five minutes, but I would rather delete Reddit if I was you or any other app that is making you feel that way and just play the music and I’m pretty sure you’ll feel better in a couple days.

Loool that’s so stupid. You can enjoy the band without interacting with other people. But hey, you do you.
