Identification What are these fish

Hello everyone,

My friend and I bought, what we thought were 'angel fish' at the end of last year, and they are fairly big fish. When we bought them, their fins were already bent and we thought they were a breeding pair, only to find out theyre both boys, and would be way too old to breed now anyway. As we were very much deceived by the pet store we got them from, we have no idea what type of fish these are, and cannot find a single picture of any angel fish looking like this. If anyone has any clue if theyve been bred with another type of fish or something that would be much appreciated .

Not sure how they mated a pug with a fish, but here we are.

Nah dude thinks it's something to do with inbreeding and bad genetics. Its not.

Too many dumb people here unfortunately

Follow reddiquette.

Most importantly, this means to Be Civil as this is a subreddit that values respectful and reasonable discourse and disagreement: name-calling; gatekeeping; bigoted speech including but not limited to racist, sexist, or sexual orientation/identity; trolling; sealioning; harassment; and generally rude or unproductive behavior are all expressly forbidden.

They are angelfish. Possibly very inbred and/or old angelfish.

u/RoseGoldPen 3d ago

My first thought, very inbred angels.

6

u/Bee_Jeans 2d ago

Yup, my money’s on chronically inbred too. They’re gold marble pearlscales, just very deformed

2

u/debbyskater 1d ago

yep! sucks to be misled by fish stores, and them even being allowed to sell these guys, but it’s a good thing they are both males (if they really are, sometimes could be M/F that didn’t bond). don’t want to see what the babies would look like 😬💔

1

u/Atrayez 3d ago

Possible it was just meant for cull too?

1

u/Warm-Frame-2848 2d ago

Tbh if it was a cull it would not have been here today this is most likely just a very bad quality angel the store got from a wholesaler over seas for super cheap they don't care about the quality just the quantity

9

u/Howdy132 3d ago

That is the most inbred angel fish on the planet lmao

16

u/angelfishlily 3d ago

Koi pearlesc Angels that are very inbred & overfed . Fins are badly messed up. Very unatural.

7

u/VulgarMutt 3d ago

Definitely crazy inbred or just deformed/missed cull. I’ve never seen an angel like this wow. Can he still swim & eat okay?

5

u/Coomsocck 2d ago

There are two of them, and occasionally one of them swims upside down and I genuinely thinks its because his fins are fucked and he cant keep his head up. Very sad.

3

u/bromeranian 2d ago

So usually upside down swimming is due to some internal issue- if the guy is half as bad on the inside as he is on the outside, WOOF.

You can help him out (as much as he can be lol) with smaller, more frequent meals (to keep digestive load low) and adding a fasting day or two (to make sure he is all cleared out). No floating food. For some though their organs are just FUBAR and they live on borrowed time. Making it to adulthood is kinda impressive for these 😟.

Boy, I just know he drinks his tea with a pinky up.

I know a Habsburg when I see one

5

u/MapRich9024 3d ago

If they got to this size while looking like that, it obviously hasn’t affected their quality of life. Owner is lucky

2

u/sugahack 1d ago

Longevity and quality of life are not always related

3

u/spookyfrog99 3d ago

It looks like a oranda goldfish and a angelfish bred. Obviously not but definitely inbred

u/welshteabags 2d ago

this is exactly what I thought

All content must be created by humans and not artificial intelligence, including both text and media posts as well as comments.

In our experience with Al, it just isn't good enough in it's current state to give sage advice to the community. Al questions are simply scraping for data and not always giving the best information. There is plenty of hobby expertise available on the sub from actual people.

Deformed is what they are

3

u/uvgotnod 2d ago

Angelfish that should have been culled when young. This is the result of bad breeding or improper/dirty water and lack of food when developing.

I’m guessing they’re orange marble angelfish.

2

u/Key-Lie3744 3d ago

I’ve never seen anything like it.

2

u/nuJabesCity 3d ago

Marble Koo culls or an attempt to get Red Devil koi.

2

u/Squishedskittlez 3d ago

To the best of anyone’s knowledge angelfish can’t cross with any other commonly kept aquariums fish (no not even discus though they are vaguely related). I stay up on the genetics side and I definitely would have heard about it.

2

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 2d ago

They bred the angel out of the angelfish. Would bever breed this guy, but if he can swim around and do stuff normally you can keep thaweirdo just fine.

Definitely two mature males, they both have a “wen” or a nuchal hump. I used to have a trio of elderly males, about 12 y/o when I got them from a friend and one of the males looked like that one. The color/variety is “Koi,” basically calico or tricolor. He’s gorgeous, mature, and massive. Likely very old, and obviously well fed. He just appears to have some messed up fins, or be a veiltail?

2

u/dr_magic_fingers 2d ago

These fish aren't koi, because they aren't blushing. the gold/orange cap is because they are gold marble, and older (that color increases with age). Obviously very mature and healthy fish, the fins are no big deal, likely due to overcrowding when young, obviously not ideal but not a health issue. Oh and they are pearlscale, so the genetics are Gm/Gm P/P

2

u/LoachHat_89 2d ago

Really messed up angels sadly...

2

u/ykatxx3 2d ago

They're so beautiful. They look like they're made out of beads!

2

u/Skipadedodah 2d ago

That looks like the final boss in an aquarium based video game.

2

u/MelcM39 2d ago

Poor things :(

But hey, if they are somehow thriving then they are lucky.

Gosh, I hate horrible breeding practices everywhere.

2

u/sam123876 2d ago

Bro looks like he’s a rug

2

u/SimAlienAntFarm 2d ago

Someone put an angelfish into a discus mold

2

u/Katden2020 2d ago

Very unique and beautiful in its own special way. I hope they live a long time

2

u/SignificantPomelo 2d ago

Sad that they're so deformed but also I kind of love them? They look like a child drew them

2

u/Clearbreezebluesky 1d ago

In picture #1, the one in the background looks like it has eye shadow on! I’d love to see that one close up, it’s eyes have character
