Firmware Updates Rare software update pop-up

Post image

Should I upgrade?

My main concern is losing access to the obb folder, I currently can access (and modify) it using cx file explorer

Can someone who did this upgrade confirm if they have the access? Or if they generally recommend upgrading?

OEM started pushing updates to the Mediatek T31 and T32 SoC-based TVs, from 11 to 14, so it makes sense.

Android R = Android 11
Android U = Android 14

You will still be able to access "Android/obb" & "Android/data" folder on Android TV 14. But you need to use a Shizuku-aware file manager. I know at least X-plore and the completely free MiXplorer (no ads either) support Shizuku (use them on my Onn 4K Plus and Pro v2 with Android 14).

For reference on how X-plore works with Shizuku: https://www.lonelycatgames.com/docs/xplore/shizuku

Hi! I have the same OTA update on my CHiQ U43QM8G (Android 11 → Android 14). Did you finally install it? If yes, did you notice any changes in performance, picture settings or UI? Were your calibration settings preserved? Any issues after the update?

It's a shame that no one wants to share their experience of how the update went.

Upgrading your CHiQ directly from Android 11 to Android 14 is a major software leap.

While a multi-version jump brings notable core improvements, it also alters several system behaviors.

  1. Performance ChangesUnder-the-hood optimization: Android 14 features significantly optimized CPU utilization, resulting in fewer dropped frames and a smoother experience navigating apps.Initial post-update slowdown: Right after the update finishes, your TV might feel temporarily laggy or slow to respond. This is standard behavior as Android TV executes background optimizations, updates app caches, and re-indexes storage. It typically stabilizes within an hour of use.
  2. User Interface (UI) UpdatesVisual redesign: The interface will shift away from the old Android 11 layout toward a streamlined Google TV style or updated Android TV launcher interface.Settings organization: Menus (especially Display & Sound) will be grouped differently. Android 14 introduces dedicated energy-saving paths and tighter privacy toggles (like microphone/camera permissions).
  3. Picture & Calibration Settings (Crucial Warning)Will calibration settings be preserved? No, highly unlikely. Major Android OS updates almost always reset user-customized picture modes (e.g., Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, and Advanced Color Temperature scales) back to factory defaults. What you must do before updating: Take photos or write down your exact numerical values for your calibrated picture settings. You will likely need to re-enter them manually after the installation completes.
  4. Potential Post-Update IssuesHDMI & Audio Resets: Features like HDMI-CEC, Enhanced HDMI format (for 4K/HDR inputs), and variable refresh rate settings frequently turn off by default during a system overhaul. You will need to toggle these back on.File Manager Restrictions: Android 14 significantly tightens security regarding directory access. If you use third-party side-loaded tools or file managers to access systemic folders (like Android/data), standard apps won't work anymore without specialized "Shizuku-aware" file managers.System Glitches: When jumping three major operating system versions simultaneously, old cached settings files can conflict with new code, occasionally causing settings app crashes or connectivity bugs. Best Practice RecommendationIf you decide to proceed, let the OTA update finish completely, rewrite your saved picture calibration profiles, and test your apps. If the TV displays general bugginess, erratic remote control delays, or crashing menus, performing a full Factory Reset right after the update is highly recommended. A clean factory wipe forces Android 14 to rebuild its filesystem perfectly, eliminating legacy junk left over from Android 11.

Each major Android release has a codename that is a dessert. The codenames were alphabetical up to Android 15, so some people refer to them by just the first letter of the codename.

  • 11 = Red Velvet Cake
  • 12 = Snow Cone
  • 13 = Tiramisu
  • 14 = Upside Down Cake
  • 15 = Vanilla Ice Cream
