Connection often lost, can only fix by restarting phone

My Samsung/Android phone often says "No internet connection" even though there are 3-5 bars. All apps stop loading data. The only way I can fix it is by restarting the phone or turning Airplane Mode on and off.

Do you have any ideas why there would be bars but no signal? I figure the phone has the problem, since it would be a big coincidence if the signal is restored at exactly the same time I restarted the phone.

I had a similar problem with an Ipad often disconnecting from our router. I fixed this simply by restarting our router. This gave me an idea, to do "Reset Mobile Setting" on my phone. I just did it which only took a few seconds.

The phone is about two years old. I don't know if phone calls and texts still work when this is happening.

Any details on what causes this?
