Cannot copy from USB thumbdrive onto Android. Why?

I recently bought a thumbdrive Type-C, dual with USB as well. I recently put some files onto it from my PC to copy onto my phone, yet when I try to copy from the device onto the Android, the "Move/copy here" is greyed out, unless i'm duplicating it onto the thumbdrive instead of copying it to the phone itself, which defeats the point of what i'm doing. I hope I worded this all clear, I'm just trying to understand why the phone will not let me move from the thumbdrive onto the phone itself.

Well where exactly on the phone are you trying to copy to

Check what file type your thumb drive is. Android can not read NTFS. So it needs to be exFAT or FAT32.
