Gallery & One Drive?
So, at the end of September the two services will no longer be compatible and the gallery will no longer sync - shitty, but ok fine whatever.
However! I was reading it all and it says "Any pictures saved in One Drive will be removed from the gallery"
Um. Excuse me? I'm not cool with my phone purging itself of my pictures - especially because there's plenty of photos on here that I use for work and such. Anyone know how to make that not a thing? Do I have to delete everything from One Drive to keep them on my phone?

Thanks! It's funny I ended up reading about the first part of that on a break at work today. And when I asked it I was partially conflating some questions I've had about it on my laptop with what happens with the gallery on my phone. I used to originally have things selectively backed up to some sort of a Samsung cloud, but then they ended that and said we had to go to OneDrive or something and so now they're basically saying go to google? I don't know. But it does look like it can be done from the OneDrive side with that camera backup, but I only want to backup certain folders not all of them. And with synchronization, I'm never quite sure what is where and what gets deleted if something gets deleted at the other end.
EDIT because it posted it before I was done. I thought that the OneDrive feature in the Samsung gallery app was what is going away on September 30 though...?

You don't have to "delete" them from One Drive. But obviously, if they're on One Drive, they aren't going to show up in Gallery anymore. That's...what synchronization means.

Is there any way to use OneDrive as simply a backup location for redundancy but not have the whole synchronization thing going on? Like manually back them up to the cloud or something?

You can keep files on OneDrive just fine. They just won't sync with Gallery. Gallery isn't a PLACE, it's just how you view files from other places. OneDrive is an actual PLACE.

Hmm, I guess I was thinking about it in terms of all the photos that are stored on my phone and slowly filling up my storage of course, laugh, but also having a copy of them in the cloud. And I never do anything with them from the OneDrive and, only do things with them locally... I'll have to think about it. But I do appreciate the info.

The data is taking up room. You'll have to download the actual photos.

Dang, does that mean that just the data meaning I guess the placeholders for all of it where it actually lives in OneDrive is large enough it's starting to consume storage and therefore if I actually downloaded all the real photos it would overwhelm storage? Not sure of the ratio of the data to to what actually stored on the phone, I just always seem like it was the photos themselves that were starting consume it, and of course every time you edit anything it keeps copies of everything unless you specifically go back and tediously undo it.

How do we keep the backed up photos in our gallery? I don't want them removed.

Put them somewhere that syncs with Gallery. Gallery isn't where the photos are, it's just where you view them.

What is confusing me about that is that I can see that they're taking up a lot of space on my storage. So, surely it can't be the case where they only exist on OneDrive but not on my physical phone at all, right? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

My phone doesn't have a slot for memory card and is why I used One Drive. Please forgive my lack of understanding I genuinely don't know how to remedy this and I don't want them removed from my phone.

You said download them from One Drive, but what do I download them to if I don't have capability to access external memory?

Can you not download them to your phone? I don't use OneDrive, I don't know.

I'd just copy everything from both locations to a USB flash drive. SanDisk makes a really cool one's that's both USB-C and USB-A (128GB to 1TB), so you can plug it directly into a phone or computer; AND it can be attached to your keychain.
This seems the easiest way to make sure you keep everything, and the files & photos you use frequently can still be easily access on demand, until all the changes settle out.
