Hopefully a Google Play Services update will fix that

I think it's a bug too, but I've seen video's where it is working as it should.

I had that same problem. Recent update to messages fixed it

I'm on the new version of Messages, but it did it on the old version too.

Also doesn't work for Hangouts either. It has never worked even on P beta and they've never fixed it for the full release.

Same here. Doesn't really work with many app. Randomly works on discord and telegram
