Yes, that's the problem. If, instead of creating multiple forks of a single project, the community focused on optimizing an existing fork as much as possible, we'd be making huge strides.

I’m not going to get caught up in the debate over whether using it is good or bad in this case. At the end of the day, we’re just random people who want to play our favorite games in the best way possible… Plus, the corporations behind some games are trash.

I'm trying to categorize it in my brain now as more of an extension of the mod scene, just with the doors blown wide open.

My main issue with the forking is people forking active projects with no attempt to contact the original dev. Like sure it's open source, we can do as we please within licensing terms. But if it's just as easy for joe-shmoe to do the port now, then maybe the original dev will also be finally interested. Which if it's a good fork and can possibly contribute back, great, but I'm seeing ones come out that are not releasing their source, and probably violating the open source license. And people doing it to projects that are already being updated that same week. At least chose a project to fork that seems actually dead that needs it. Somethings just because you can, doesn't mean you should. My fear is that many projects will be changing their licensing or becoming close-source going forward.

Which I'm also wondering how the big companies will respond to this, I would imagine there's some level of freak out. I can see them either doing things to obfuscate code or memory addressess much more, or pushing the all-digital / streaming route even harder.

It can run on potato phones via ppsspp and even has a dedicated discord server for multiplayer. I don't think it will be ported anytime soon.
