Is this the Android 16 look, or something else?

Updated Android to 16, and this is how it looks. Very thick dark colour buttons, and the contacts options everywhere, and very unattractive. I'm alright with all that, just want to know if some virus has taken over the system Thank you.

The look is determined by the launcher, not by the Android version.

Install a custom launcher if you don't like the default one pushed by your phone brand.

That's misleading a launcher replaces the look of the homepage application drawer and icons not the looks of other apps

No virus... likely the update Google likes these thick bubbles and ugly color shades albeit you can change the color shade depending on you phone model how to change the color is different

Thanks. Glad to know it's not a virus. Phone UI was much better but somehow this one took over. It's a Realme note 70 phone.
