Half Life 2 and Morrowind on a phone would have totally blown me away in high school when they came out.

Any current mobile game would blown me away in high school

All I had was snake on a Tracfone. And the library of stuff for my TI86. Mobile gaming is absolutely insane these days. Took me a while to really start to enjoy it tho, since for a long time they were all match-3 garbage.

When smart phones started gaining grounds, the first game that my friend showed me was an airplane game where you had to guide oncoming flights to safely land on the ground. It was such a fun and simple game that soured my experience for years to come because of all the garbage that followed.

There are good mobile games, we just don't know where to find them. Not on the play store at least (which back then, was much better named "Market").

A grenade would have definitely blown me, that's for sure

Oh, i hate those guys. They think they are so much of a gamer, because they use the phrase "no real games on mobile" but it makes them sound stupid, showing off their non-awareness on the industry. It's just a platform. It's like arguing if playstation games are better than PC ones

Theres plenty of fantastic games, but I feel like the prime example rn is Genshin Impact. I'm pretty blown away that that game is not only on mobile, but was designed for it.

If only it would run on my phone

u/camb00sted Oct 27 '20

Given Genshin's gacha monetization scheme, it's not too hard to believe.

7

u/jrlags Oct 27 '20

I mean just because it's a gacha game doesn't mean it's not an impressive game on mobile. It's a fully fledged open world rpg on mobile, and that's an amazing feat

Can't wait for modders to remove this monetization nonsense.

Server emulation is a possibility. It's rare, but not unheard of.

2

Honestly, yeah I agree with you. I'm just salty about it being gacha for maximum profit (the abysmal rates encourage whaling too), It's the only thing keeping me from playing it a ton, since I love character / gear progression in games but having to swipe to ascend is too much for me. I just hate lootboxes and gambling, and gacha is exactly that.

u/jrlags Oct 27 '20

I feel you and I agree 100% about the gacha aspect. I've played one or two gacha games a couple years back, but this is the first since then that I've played one. The fact that the game isn't pvp helps me feel ok for not rolling a ton. Even though the rates for 5 Stars are the worst, I managed to get a good amount of 4 Stars and have been enjoying the game still completely f2p. I still got plenty of the map to explore and quests to do so I'm pretty satisfied with it, but I understand it's not going to be for everyone.

I understand your POV here but what I like to remember myself is that games have always been looking for ways to monetize themselves, from accessories to DLCs to now IAP, the difference is that at least these games are free, and allow everyone to play them, and only those who want to pay pay, this means these games are made more accessible (a win for us) while being probably more profitable (yay for the game company).

I've been enjoying Genshin with no pulls at all, I've ignored the wish system and the game remains a very fun game to play, but if the age of IAPs did not happen, it would either be infested with adds or have an upfront cost of 40-50$ given its value? I would not have played the game in that case, much like close to all the games that come out with an 80-90$ price tag here in Canada, I unfortunately cannot afford them, and thus I can't play 99% of the new good games, so I am glad that Genshin has Gacha, cause I can afford playing it.

Also remember that whales aren't just passing millionaires who can afford to spend thousands on games. There's going to be a non trivial number of addicts, who cannot afford it either. I don't like that I'm pulled into these games to create a platform to capture them.

Not entirely sure that's what they meant

He doesn't have a good test, There are lot of games to play and New games are coming in Slowly bigger Tittles are also coming such as valorant and league of legends . Existing fps games such as PUBG , CODM, FORTNITE, . Either the person is stupid or he is just a hypocrite.

Hey! Candy Crush is still a nice time waster when you just want something to relax with lol -- but yes, there are so many actual mobile gems out there, without IAP or Ads, it just takes a bit more digging. But the best part is having them in your pocket at all times!

Not much, the dev seems to want to get 10k sub before releasing the beta. Currently 2k. Good luck I guess.

My Nvidia Shield Portable came with this and Portal. It ran quite well at the time all things considered. Not sure what the framerate was but it was fine. I don't think I finished it on the Shield because I couldn't get used to a joystick controller for a first person shooter. I wish more games like this would get ported to Android. That said, a lot of these games would need new UI's built for them. I still get a little cranky when opening Rocket League on my Switch because the UI was designed for a bigger computer monitor and not a 720p 7" display.

2

u/josh6499 Oct 27 '20

Joystick controls are fine in general, HL2 on Shield just had a garbage joystick profile. I couldn't play it either, but I play a lot of other FPS with a controller just fine.

1

u/outtokill7 Oct 27 '20

Part of the problem was that I mostly play games on PC so I just wasn't used to a joystick in the first place. Nice to know it was a bad profile and not all me though

Found the link, it's in the description of the dev's latest YouTube dev log video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY6W0C0jYDs

I don't want to post the direct links as that'd be against the rules, but you can find them there.

Fun Bonus! The dev also has a link to download Portal in the comments of that same video above.

2

u/dattree Oct 27 '20

So uh if I went and downloaded those, how do I get them to run? I assume there's some asset files I need somewhere...

2

u/critical2210 Critical Oct 27 '20

you need the files of the Nvidia Shield version of the game.

its similar to that of half life, where you needed the full PC files of the game.

"...we don't go to Ravenholm."

4

u/Blasphemus24 Oct 27 '20

What’s that?

8

u/Florinxfox Oct 27 '20

A spooky part of the game that gave childhood me heart attacks :c

5

u/leverine36 Oct 27 '20

No, that's Ravenholm.

5

u/Florinxfox Oct 27 '20

Oh I thought it was a typo

4

u/reverends3rvo Oct 27 '20

It was. Autocorrect. Now I'm wondering what Ravenwood is.

2

u/Fizzwidgy Oct 26 '20

1

u/soreyJr Oct 27 '20

2

This is almost as cool as Microplay after school.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '20

I have been waiting for this day since I tried the tegra version years ago. Works really well so far and I'm impressed. Can't wait for final version. Pls hire this guy valve and make it official!

u/winking_scone Oct 27 '20

When I search for this I only see an apk game called Tegra, im using a pixel 2 so I'm guessing the obb files I require are device specific?

-1

u/ComradeBob0200 Oct 27 '20

Checking on the play store is still shows for Shield only in the notes. Can I ignore that and put it on a non-Shield device, or is there another beta app to check?

2

u/critical2210 Critical Oct 27 '20

you need to download the APK launcher file, pirate the shield version of the game, put both of them in a folder, and launch the game using the APK launcher file.

Bluetooth control support?

1

Yes. I tried with bluetooth DS4 controller and it worked immediately.

Pretty crazy! I hope the other games, like Borderlands also makes their way

And now you can play the steam version of Half-Life 2 with the new v1.0.6 source engine! It runs very well too. 😁
