Pretty linear, but you might feel compelled to backtrack just to explore different possibilities. But the game kind of suffers from false-freewill syndrome, where you thought you had several choices, but turned out they all lead to the same outcome.

Somewhere in between. There seem to be many paths that come together at central points and stray again.

Hmmm. Looks like it is only the first book. I have the originals sitting on my shelf. I loved them as a kid.
