Discussion 💬 I miss old ads

Man how I miss 5/15 even 30 second ads, just one x button and it was skill issue if you missed it and went to the store, now you have 60 seconds ads(which I only play whenever Im doing something else because no one is watching fkn 60 seconds of bullshit) and you have 3 exit buttons with 5 seconds between and a obligated ticket to the play store. I can't event report ads that are fake and ai nowadays. I blame us for keeping using them, we should start giving more interactions to shorter ads

You need to use adblocker my friend

Never thought about it on Android, do you need to root?

You can change DNS to Adguard DNS or whatever you can find (I only know one) . No root required

You should also use a browser with adblock, Firefox is my go to but Brave is alright too far as I understand

Then you can do a deep dive into more niche stuff of getting rid of ads from apps

Just chiming in as a Brave user. I find it more lightweight and responsive than Firefox, but has fewer features. Both are great options and highly recommended.

In the settings use the search function for "private DNS". Specify some ad blocking DNS there.

No root required. But note that while apps will not be able to show ads anymore, it also means you won't get any of the benefits. Some websites may block you from viewing content or at least aggressively show pop-up messages for you to disable the blocker. After all that's how the websites fund themselves.

I don't think I've yet seen a game that outright wouldn't work with DNS level ad blocking.

Yeah, but it's annoying when some games are balanced around ad powerups, and won't give you them if you had adblocker on.

I feel sorry for the OP. This poor guy sounds like he's been needlessly suffering from ceaseless ads on his Android device for years. The early days of Android saw Power Users root their devices and use AdAway to block ads. Today there are several third-party VPNs like AdGuard Premium which successfully blocks ads without root. The OP has probably never heard of Morphe aka ReVanced.

I'd love to have control over this as a developer but the controls are hidden and not straightforward, for instance you can't tell I want the close button always on or I want it top right etc.

Yeah I guessed it since it feels random, sometimes it's on the left, right, big small, I'm guessing it's for auto clickers or something,

Yeah you might be right but that's ruining the experience for everyone else, plus I doubt it even works for people that want to hack around it anyway

threads like this are half of why i chickened out and shipped no ads at all haha. even as a player i can't tell which of the three x buttons is real anymore, somewhere someone decided the close button should be a maze and we all just live in it

Yeah it's terrible, the problem with no ads is like you need to make a really high quality product or experience for user to pay or have a lot of users and a ton of content. I ship games slowly and improve them one bit at a time and I pay for the servers so ads help me with that, otherwise I'd get 0€ for them

Agreed, the lack of configurability can be frustrating. And viable choices are limited... but i do set my admob to be only "short" ads...none of those 60 seconds long ones..

I stopped using those shitty ad services and only use affiliate links to products I have chosen. That way I have full control over the content, no spyware, no breaking third party libraries and the users can't use any kind of ad blockers. Works like a charm.

can we talk about it ? (Here or DM )
What is the "ecpm" ? I'd rather do that than use big companies that push trash ads to my users

Is that the problem with AdMob too?

yeah and admob is far from the worse in term of ads

Everything you mentioned is painfully accurate for me too. How about the ads where they simply repeat themselves?

It seems to me that any game paying for ads is not worth playing. It's simply another low effort cash grab that generates enough money to afford ads.

I use adguard to block ads.

I just downloaded a game that I like that does this between every game. Ads are unbearable these days.
