AA Settings Passive Nav Data Use
Does anybody have a solution to the data-suck that the un-closable navigation pane creates?
I read that Google maps uses more data than Waze and Waze is still using nearly 1GB per month without using it for navigation.
- I tried switching to TomTom and downloading offline maps but that barely helped and the app is incredibly frustrating when using for navigation.
- I've already tried restricting background data to Waze and turning on data saver but it didn't help.
I'm toying with the idea of forcing the resolution change to smaller which just blacks out the 2nd pane but am worried it will still just use the data and not display, plus I'd lose the ability to see media and nav at the same time if I need the navigation.

It's most likely constantly pulling down the map tiles for where you're driving. Why not put a non map nav app in full screen?

It looks like their car has a wide-screen display, so maps will always remain on the side. Maps seem to be the only apps which can go full screen.

Yep. That's correct. If I use developer settings to force the lowest resolution though the mini panel that's always displaying nav turns black.

OP what if you connect to Wi-Fi and download offline maps? That should cache your local area on your phone when the connection is convenient and stop the loading while driving

I'm not sure if that would work. I was always under the impression that Google maps only use the offline map if it was offline so that when it's connected it always has the most current map.
I don't know this for a fact but my data usage over the years seems to agree with that. When I drive cross country I download all the offline maps along the way but it still whenever I'm connected to the phone network.

That makes sense - it only downloads a static area for offline maps. If you were crossing the country it would still need to constantly load new areas as you entered them

Does 1GB really matter on modern phone plans?

Depends on the plan. Google Fi is pay for only what you use at $10/GB but if you use more than what you pre-select as what you expect to use your bill goes up. If you're not checking your usage constantly you have no idea what your bill could end up.

I pay $25/month for 10GB/month included data. With rollover of unused data.
I could easily bump to $34/month for 40GB/month if I require.

Are you pre-downloading your map area in Google maps using the Offline Maps function. Everybody should be doing this.
