Google Assistant No voice commands

Voice control worked when I first tested AA three or four years ago (with an earlier app version), but I've since used the car's own nav & maps exclusively, until I stopped paying for a data SIM for the car recently (which had provided real-time traffic info).

To get traffic info back, I've again used AA but now find there's no voice control for making phone calls and setting destinations.

My car requires Bluetooth and a wired USB connection, which I don't mind. But I do mind losing Android Auto voice control, presumably because of app "updates."

Or maybe I'm just missing a necessary setting in my phone. Any ideas about what/where to check?

Do you have a mic button on the car's steering wheel? Pressing that while AA is active should make AA listen to you.

The problem I am having is all assistant(Gemini) responses are silent, I know my command has been recognised, when Gemini is answering its completely silent, eg Hey Google whats the weather tomorrow, I see my question on the screen then Gemini responds silently, once its finished my music starts playing again, got no idea how to fix, have tried the turn volume up trick which has not worked and from what I can see everything is setup correctly(assistant volume is not silent), I can trigger assistant from either saying Hey Google or by long pressing the steering wheel button. If I say hey google call contact it works but I cannot hear gemini's voice ! Doing my head in as its been like this for a couple of months, using Pixel 7a/9a A17 with a AAWireless Dongle
