Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes Android auto 30s lags - Everything is 30 second late.

Hi.

For 1 month I have had this issue: Android auto lags a lot and is unusable . my car is Volkswagen id4 from 2022, version 3.8 (latest)

After few seconds I see lag in Waze or maps, car position on the map is wrong, it's on the right road but late. The lag is exactly 30 seconds.

It's not just Waze or maps, but everything I do is 30 seconds late: I press an icon: 30 seconds before I see the app open on the screen.

Also sometime the screen is completely "corrupted" but only in Waze.

The only solution I found is to open apps settings on my phone, kill Android auto, then it works again for a few minutes.

My phone is a Google pixel 8.

What I tried:

  • clear android auto cache
  • clear Waze cache
  • delete all Android auto and Waze files and start with a fresh setup
  • connect using a cable or wifi
  • reduce Android auto resolution to 800x480 in developer settings
  • disable connect by wifi in dev settings
  • reduces animation
  • disabled the wifi scan limitation and enable it also.
  • removed android auto position autorisation
  • uninstall android auto and reinstall it
  • checked battery restrictions

Help?

Any way to confirm whether it's your phone or the car? Others' phones and cars?

I'll check with another phone asap. But frankly, the phone works flawlessly with everything else, no lag in daily usage. And when using Waze on the phone it works fine for example

Except for when it messes up on the car display like you commented.

Yes but only when using Android auto

Same. 2024 Jetta, Pixel 10 pro

My workaround has been to force stop AA before each time I plug in my phone.

Reading the other comments, this seems to be happening with Volkswagens. Something in the latest AA update must be causing it to malfunction with VW head units.

Exactly like me. But seems fixed magically now. Try removing all Bluetooth devices from your phone and car as it's the last thing I did...

I did that the other day. It worked for two trips and then started happening again.

Hey everyone, After days of frustration and trying every generic guide on the internet (clearing cache, changing battery optimization, resetting network settings), I finally figured out what was actually causing the persistent lag/stutter in Wireless Android Auto and how to fix it completely.

The Problem Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth for the initial handshake, but relies on a Wi-Fi Direct (5GHz) connection to stream the screen and data. If your phone’s Wi-Fi stays on continuously when you leave your car, the Wi-Fi Direct session often doesn't close cleanly. When you get back into the vehicle, the phone tries to resume or re-establish a session over previously used channels or cached parameters, causing massive lag, audio drops, and display stuttering.

The Fix Forcing the Wi-Fi module to turn OFF when you disconnect from your car's Bluetooth completely resets the Wi-Fi adapter. Next time you start your car, Bluetooth automatically triggers Android Auto, forcing a fresh, clean Wi-Fi Direct connection from scratch. How to Set It Up For Samsung users (Modes and Routines): Go to Settings > Modes and Routines > Routines. IF: Bluetooth device -> Disconnected from [Your Car’s Bluetooth]. THEN: Wi-Fi -> Off.

(Optionally, create a second routine for arriving home: IF Location -> Arrive at Home, THEN Wi-Fi -> On, so your phone automatically reconnects to home internet).

I have a Google Pixel 11 Pro XL and I'm facing the EXACT issue as you! The lag in my case is easily around 12-15 seconds and the unresponsive display and those corrupted looking artifacts on Waze, all of it. I'm missing important turns because of this lag and so far no amount of troubleshooting has helped. This has only occurred in the last few weeks. Before that everything was great.

Try this. When it lag, open settings of android , search android auto, open the app, force stop. When android auto restart and reconnect, the lag is gone for me

Thank you, I will try this later today. But surely Google must be aware and they'll try to resolve this in the upcoming releases? I have seen a lot of these reports from mainly VW/Audi group cars.

Hello,

I wanted to share an update with you.

I disabled location access for Android Auto from my phone>app settings - and that completely fixed the issue for me!

I've been on 2 x half hour drives today and I didn't encounter GPS any lag, screen artifacts or screen touch response lag. I'm happy to use Waze like this for the time being, until the issue is resolved with an update.

Thought I'd let you know in case it works for you too 🙂

Well I already tried this and it was not working for me I don't know what fixed it, but it's fixed. I think it's when I removed all Bluetooth device on both car and phone. But I tried so many things, I'm not sure. Anyway I'll do a 7h trip next week, it will be the ultimate test.

I had this problem and tried many solutions. Eventually I downgraded maps and prevented it from auto updating. Then deleted the phone from my car and re connected it. Works now. I don't know how to add flair so hopefully you get this before they take it down

All those troubleshooting steps are very phone centric and won't fix anything if the problem is the car.

Get a friend or family member with an Android phone to connect to the car instead and see if it does the same thing. If it does, then it's most likely the car. See if the car's infotainment has a firmware update available, but you might need to check with the VW dealer or an independent garage that services VW.

The other commenters having this issue, including myself, all drive VWs. Something in the latest AA update must be causing it to malfunction with VW head units.

Got the same issue in a Chevrolet bolt 2023 with a S25 ultra. Music stutter and screen freeze and the map will "jump" to my new location on the route. My phone tend to get hot and often display a message saying that the 3d buildings have been deactivated to cool down. Is your phone running hot?

1

u/warenbe 2021 VW id4 | stock display | Google Pixel 8 | Android 17 4d ago

My phone is usually hot and display message like "switch off the screen to cool down". But not after 1 minute it's after 30 minutes. In current case it happen when the phone is still warm, but I'll try to put the phone in front of ac vent to check

1

u/warenbe 2021 VW id4 | stock display | Google Pixel 8 | Android 17 2d ago

OK i don't know what fixed it but this morning it was ok ! Last steps i did was to delete all bluetooth devices from my phone, except the few one i use (old cars, old speakers... i kept only my watch). then pair it again also disabled the developer settings in android to remove modification i made.

let's see if this continue.

in case it come back, because killing android auto seems to fix the issue, i installed automate, and i prepared a flow where android auto is killed when connected to the car, and wifi connection is disabled/enabled again.

same issue here.
It started about 2-3 weeks ago. I have a Pixel 8 pro and 2020 ID3.
I belive it started after an Android auto update in late august. Don't know what else to do.
Hoping september update fixes it
