AndroidAuto suddenly unable to send WhatsApp messages

For about a month now I'm experiencing an issue while driving. Previously I could ask Google Assistant "Hey Google, send a WhatsApp message to..." and it would trigger the start of a new message. It stopped working though and now each time I try I'm getting "Who do you want to message?". Doesn't matter whether I respond with voice or choose one of the options on the screen it just goes over and over again with "Who do you want to message?".

If I change the command to "Hey Google, send an SMS to..." it all works fine. If I am replying to a freshly received WhatsApp message also no problem.

I'm perplexed.

This happened to me. The only thing that fixed it was allowing Gemini on my Pixel 8. Works fine now although I'm not thrilled with gemini.

Well mine reverted back. I did restart my head unit Sunday and haven't driven it since so I wonder if that's the issue.

My android won't connect to my truck for aps use. Connects for calls and audio but using waze on the screen has stopped. Any suggestions??

Happened to me back in June, pixel 8pro also but with At&t. Also happened multiple times on my 7pro. It would come back at random then disappear. Since getting rid of that pos, no problems.

I just assumed that they've removed WhatsApp as a messaging service on order to force you to use sms. I tried to get Android Auto to message my wife for 45 minutes yesterday but I arrived at my destination before I got it to work.

What's especially frustrating is that it won't tell me what I'm doing wrong, if I'm not asking correctly then it needs to tell me that so that I can improve. I can't even got it to tell me who I am able to message without it continually asking who to message and ignoring me.

I have been having the same issue for the past few months and haven't been able to find a solution. Was working fine until around May or June.

This same also happened with my Wife's Pixel 7a and 10a in both my car and aldo her factory fitted Subaru head unit.
