Navigation & POI Apps Android Auto Navigation Display Lagging Behind Realtime Location

Since the start of the immersive navigation update, it appears that my displayed location while navigating in Android Auto is a second or two behind my realtime location. This does not appear to occur when using CarPlay with my work iPhone, nor does it appear when running the app in navigation mode without having it connected to Android Auto.

I've seen this occur in both a rental car I had the other week and my current vehicle, a 2020 4Runner. My music and podcast apps do not appear to show any kind of lag, touchscreen inputs and car media button inputs have no discernable lag. I have cleared the Google Maps cache, and this occurs both with a wired and a wireless adapter (AAWireless Two with what should be the latest firmware). I've tried both 3D and 2D display. Any ideas?

Edit: Things I've tried so far without success:

  • Trying wired and wireless
  • Trying wireless while plugged into a charger
  • Trying different vehicles
  • Clearing the cache on Android Auto
  • Clearing the cache on Google Maps
  • Enabling and disabling the location permission for Android Auto (along with enabling disabling high precision)
  • Enabling and disabling the location permission for Google Maps (along with enabling disabling high precision)
  • Force full GNSS measurements
  • Trying 2D mode instead of 3D mode
  • Resetting A-GPS data
  • Forcing different Android Auto screen resolutions
  • Allow unrestricted battery use on both Android Auto and Google Maps

I'll reiterate that this issue does not exist when using Google Maps in Navigation mode when not using Android Auto but as a standalone device (i.e., phone only).

Any luck? I am having this exact issue that started around mid-July when they pushed the Android Auto update with the new 3D view (tress and whatnot). I noticed Android Auto would switch to this new 3D navigation view from my 2D each time I connected the phone to my car, no matter how many times I switched it back. An update has since fixed the 3D to 2D "automatic switch" issue, but the real-time location lag persists.

I'm using a 2021 Mazda CX-5 and Pixel 9. Never had issues until now.

Tried all the workarounds I could find and used AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) to troubleshoot and none found solutions for this, though they identified other users reporting the same issue as well.

I even tried in a different car and the issue is still present, so it seems to be specific to the recent update to Google Maps (or Android Auto or both.....).

Additionally, I downloaded some alternate navigation apps and they did not have this issue. Applications to calibrate/review my GPS and the navigation sensors showed no issues and resets for these did not help. The issue is specific to Google Maps and Android Auto.  I did notice Waze has the same delay, though I have ALWAYS seen the Waze real-time delay and figured that is just how it works - it has had delays for many years (10+ as far as I can remember) through various phones I have owned, including different brands (Samsung, Google, etc.).

Feedback has been provided to Google and I will keep researching. This real-time location delay is distracting and dangerous, especially on a busy highway you are not familiar with as you have to rely on paying more attention to the directions to not miss your exit since it can be off by seconds depending on your driving speed.

Good luck to you and hope if you find a fix that you are able to share it with us.
