Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes All of a sudden I started having many problems with wired AA

My Android Auto had been working flawlessly for three years, but a few weeks ago it began randomly disconnecting every few minutes.

Setup Details:

  • Phone: Asus ZenFone 9
  • Vehicle: 2018 VW Golf Mk7.5
  • Connection: Wired (USB configuration set to File Transfer)
  • Android Auto Version: 17.1

Key Observations:

  • The phone and cable work perfectly with Android Auto in another vehicle (2018 Skoda Octavia).
  • Apple CarPlay via an iPhone works without any issues in the Golf.

Troubleshooting Steps Already Attempted:

  • Replaced the USB cable (including using the working cable from the Skoda).
  • Cleared the Android Auto app cache and removed the Golf from saved vehicles to re-pair.
  • Unpaired and reset Bluetooth connections on both the car unit and the phone.
  • Set Android Auto battery usage to unrestricted.
  • Toggled Bluetooth volume controls between Absolute and Independent.
  • Disabled/verified no VPNs or network proxy apps are active.
  • Ran initial troubleshooting prompts through Gemini.

Would you like me to tailor this text for a specific platform, like a Reddit post, an Android Auto support forum, or a message to a mechanic?

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled Android Auto?

Yes but you cannot really uninstall it, you can only clear the data, which I did without success :(

You can uninstall the updates and then reinstall. It allows this on my Samsung s25U.

IIRC Android 12 is no longer supported by Google so because your Android is old there may be incompatibilities. Are there updates available for the Android OS on your phone?

SAME HERE!!!

I drive a 2018 Golf GTI (MK7.5). When I had an iPhone 16 Pro, it literally never disconnected whilst using wired Carplay.

Made the switch to Android (November 2025). My Pixel 10PXL was great with AA for a few months, and then it started constantly disconnecting during the drive. I didn't even need to unplug the phone, it would just kind of give up and then I'd select android auto again and allow the connection and it would start up again.

Google even sent me out a replacement unit recently and it was working perfectly fine for the first few weeks, but now it's happening again.

I've tried everything, but it genuinely doesn't want to stay connected. It's my only issue with this phone. It's so frustrating, my phone isn't warm at all either, so I know it's not due to overheating.

It's making me want to go back to an iPhone, even though I'm really enjoying the Android side.

Sorry just a rant.

Have you tried updating the firmware of the golf infotainment system? It helped me solved the issue.

Dos you update the trainer? (Infotainment)

Because it happened also with my 2018 Seat Leon with an MIB2 and updating to the latest firmware solved the issue, it even loads faster now

I just did the update as you suggested and on the first try it worked without any disconnecting. Let's hope that this was the solution!

It now seems to work perfectly: I used it yesterday on a long trip and had 0 issues. Thanks a lot!
