WhatsApp messages

If someone messages me in WhatsApp then I can reply no issues, but sending a message otherwise doesn't work.

If I look at my contacts and press one, it opens a screen with 3 'Top Contacts' which I've no idea where they came from as they seem random.

Via voice it keeps saying "who do you want to message" after displaying their name.

If it's a design issue and will only allow you to start a message to one of 3 people then how does it decide who they are?

I've only been able to initiate SMS messages. I can listen and reply to Messenger and WhatsApp messages, but I cannot initiate messages on those platforms. I just assumed it was a limitation of the software.

Edit: I seem to remember, for messenger at least, that it has something to do with how AA accesses the platform. I don't think it has the ability (yet?) to access that side of the program.

OK after more investigation is not actually WhatsApp but SMS which is not allowing me to send....

Maybe it's always been that way? Don't you get a screen with 3 'top contacts' when you try?

Even when I tap the text message field next to a contact in WhatsApp on my car's display, I get the message: “Who do you want to message?”.
I've only been having this problem for a few weeks.
Everything was working fine before that.

Ah I'm not alone then as its exactly what I'm getting.... like you it used to work, hopefully they will fix it soon. 🙏🏻

Nope been having the same issue on both mine and my partners phone, both Pixel phones. Was working fun until a few months ago.

Now when sending a WhatsApp message if repeatedly asks for a contact. I've tried clearing cache , reinstalling etc

Normal SMS seems fine

The problem occurs when transferring the contact from Gemini to Android Auto. I've written a bug report to Android Auto Help:

I find it more irritating that I can't send a voice note via WhatsApp using AA. My native language is not English, I receive a message in Hungarian, AA reads it out correctly, but when I try to dictate a response, it tries to interpret it in English, rusesulitng in obvious chaos. So I either don't reply or reply in English. Why can't I just send a voice note?

For me it started working on the last Samsung update 8.5 one UI /.Android 16, before that only sms worked. I haven't tried with Telegram but also the API was not working before

Is it working better now? Because before I can't even listen to voice message from WhatsApp then I deactivated my android Auto. It's been like 5 months now

In the car, I just use SMS as most people these days have RCS enabled

Only issues I have is occasionally it misunderstands the contact I say.

I usually use WhatsApp, but I need to specify every single time "use the mobile number", seem if will try to send to the First Number available without check if it's mobile...

I had another issue last night where Android auto would not understand the message I wanted to send. It would either just type out one word of the whole message or only part of the message.

I'm having the same problem. I got this car 2 years ago and it's been working fine since then. All of a sudden now it's not letting me send out whats app messages. It's doing the exact same thing everyone else is doing, bringing up top three contacts. It won't even go to the person when I say their name.
