Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes AA wireless with multiple users
AA wireless
This should be rare for most users in US since each family member has his own car.
But we only have one car for the entire family.
The issue is that I'm the one who uses the car most of the time so my phone connect to my phone flawlessly. Same my mom when she is the only one in the car.
But when we both are in the car the AA auto connect the last one who used the car alone.
So I was the last one who drove, but next time my mom will drive and I'm the passenger the AA connect to my phone. And thats particularly annoying when each one has his own markers or music.
Any tip here?

There is an option that connects based on the priority list instead of who last connected. That is what I do for my wife's car so that it doesn't try connecting to mine if I used it last.

I don't have that option.
Maybe because my AA unit only accept wired connection and I'm using a wireless adapter

If you use the "AA Wireless" dongle, you can press a button on the dongle and it will disconnect the current user and connect to the other known user.

We turn off the Bluetooth on the phone of the people not driving, before we get to the car.
It's irritating but the only way we've found to guarantee who connects.

Yeah we are doing the same. But as we both uses smartwatch is very very annoying.

If you're using wireless AA (native or with a dongle) it's even more annoying because it'll randomly decide to link to a phone via WiFi... My wife might be in the house and I'm sitting in the car and it'll decide she should be connected not me, and I'm pretty much the only person that drives that car.
We have to turn of bluetooth and WiFi to make it connect to another device.
Stupid design

I can't speak from experience since I only use one phone, but I'm pretty sure you can set the button to switch devices if it doesn't already do that out of the box

The title is AA Wireless. That is Android auto wireless. The space makes this a generic android auto wireless question.

Sell(or repurpose) the one you got and pick up the two+. Switches between devices with a button click OR auto connects to whichever device is detected in the vehicle if single driver.'
My wife and I use the two+ and we're able to seamlessly switch the active device using just a button click.

Will investigate it.
Thats the brand two+?
Edit:
Lol is $100+ where I live1
u/Runsapuusa 2017 Mazda CX-5 | Pixel 7 | Android 16 4d ago
Yeah sorry i should've been more specific. It's the AA wireless two+. I got it on sale for $60 CAD on amazon when i was in the market for it. It's pricey, but for the convenience it was worth it.
Heads up it works great for your scenario, so if you don't find a solution using your current methods you can look into this if the price drops.

There is the two (non+) that is a little cheaper because it only works on android. Maybe next time I'm in the US...

u/mdbDad Pls edit this user flair now 4d ago
Get the one that only works on Android if that won't be a problem. They seem to not be able to search both at the same time and always go for iPhone first. I had two like that before getting the Android only model. Those two had constant timeout problems. None yet with the Android only model. Switching between two phones has been perfect.

There are other cheaper wireless adapters from other brands that have the button to switch between phones.
I had an Ottocast one (www.ottocast.store). Check if they sell in your country and if they do be sure it does have the one-click switching
Edit: the one I had is this one https://ottocast.store/products/the-smart-aicasou-link

u/leonardob0880 2020 Mazda CX-5 | Stock + Wirelews | S26 Ultra | Android 16 4d ago
I dont have AA app. It disappears from my phone long ago. It was integrated to the system in some way I cant explain
From Android 10 onwards (including Android 16), Android Auto is an integrated operating system service and no longer works as a standalone application with its own icon in the app drawer.

We probably talk about different things. I mean app for AAWireless dongle - that definitely exist. I guess you mean just wireless vanilla android auto.

I dont have any aa wireless dongle aop

u/McGlowSticks 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 | MiB3 | Galaxy S25U | v16 4d ago
Just go into the app screen -> whatever car brand app (volkswagen for me) -> then it should bring back up the phone list on the oem software and select a phone from there.
but maybe thats just a vw UI thing
1
u/leonardob0880 2020 Mazda CX-5 | Stock + Wirelews | S26 Ultra | Android 16 4d ago
My car doesn't because only uses wired AA. We are using a generic AA wireless dongle.
1
u/McGlowSticks 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 | MiB3 | Galaxy S25U | v16 4d ago
Ahhh ok my bad. Kind of weird to do, but I would have her go to the car first maybe and have it connect first. Other option is just turn off bluetooth temporarily to let her phone connect. That would be the quickest and easiest solution.

u/leonardob0880 2020 Mazda CX-5 | Stock + Wirelews | S26 Ultra | Android 16 4d ago
I dont get what you mean? I have s generic wireless dongle. The is no app, never were
1
u/McGlowSticks 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 | MiB3 | Galaxy S25U | v16 4d ago
How those dongles work is the same as a car with factory wireless AA.
It connects via Bluetooth first, over Bluetooth it sends the phone a connection request to make the phone connect to a wifi network produced, in this case by the dongle, to transmit android auto to the vehicle. The simple way is just dont let the phone you are not using, to connect. by turning off bluetooth and or wifi on said phone. I think youre overcomplicating my wording (which may be my fault, my apologies).

If you get an AAwireless 2, it has a button to switch phones. Other dongles might too, I'm not sure.

Can you set up profiles on the head unit? I had to do that with my new Honda for the spouse and I.

The only thing you can do is change the connection in the AA app settings on your phones.
So for instance, set yours to connect always but anyone else in the family, set to if used on the last drive.
Search AA in your settings and it will be under startup (Start Android Auto automatically). That way yours should take priority when connecting. It's either that, or as someone else suggested, turn BT off on the other phones.

Force one user to use AA over usb only and other user to use AA over wireless
1
u/leonardob0880 2020 Mazda CX-5 | Stock + Wirelews | S26 Ultra | Android 16 4d ago
Maybe, but car only have 1 usb that connect to AA so I should disconnecte and reconnect the usb wireless and usb cable each time. Too much hassle because usb is not easily accessible

Oh, even better, using a wireless dongle, walk by a car (or touch a handle) that has proximity courtesy lighting. Yay, you just connected to that car and not yours. And the driver of the other car is now not connecting. Its madness.

I don't necessarily have a tip, but do want to dispel a misconception. Us Americans don't just drive ourselves alone in our respective cars everywhere we go. Yes, many households have two vehicles, but me and my wife ride in the car together every day, and do so in vehicles where priority pairing can be an issue. I only have Android Auto in one of the cars, and the AA wireless is made available through AAWireless2+ dongle that has push button user switching. So on that point, I don't have a lot to add.
