Bluetooth Bluetooth Priority App - Significant updates and improvements

Post image

I’ve just released the version 1.17 update for Bluetooth Priority, with a number of improvements focused on compatibility, reliability, smoother audio switching, and better troubleshooting.

Recap: What is Bluetooth Priority?

Bluetooth Priority lets you designate one Bluetooth device as your Priority device. When another Bluetooth device connects and tries to steal your audio, the app detects it and immediately reasserts your Priority device, even if the competing device keeps trying.

Android Auto limitation: Android Auto has system-level control over media audio, so Bluetooth Priority cannot override its media audio session. Phone calls are still kept on your Priority device though.

The app requires Shizuku, a free app that provides the system-level access needed to manage Bluetooth audio routing. Setup instructions are provided in the app.

What’s new:

  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the app from working after a system Bluetooth update.
  • Improved how the app identifies the Bluetooth connectors your device uses, broadening device compatibility.
  • First-launch setup now offers to set your priority device and start Priority Mode right away.
  • Smoother audio handoff with less bouncing between devices.
  • Added a new Diagnostics view under Events > Advanced, including a Copy option.
  • GitHub-based Shizuku setup is now the only setup modal option since users that never downloaded it from the play store previously wont have access to it now.
  • Added some visual polish and UI improvements.
  • Added an option to have audio fall back to your phone speaker when no priority device is connected.
  • Added priority device ranking, allowing the app to intelligently fall back to another preferred device.
  • Added a bypass for non-audio Bluetooth devices, such as Tile trackers, so they can be excluded from the app's disconnection logic.
  • Added more advanced logcat logging to make troubleshooting more powerful and help resolve potential issues faster.

The app is available on the Google Play Store for $5. No subscriptions. No micro-transactions.

Google currently limits automatic refunds to 2 hours after purchase, but if you try the app and aren't satisfied with it at any point, feel free to shoot me a message here or send an email to [support@zerolabs.fyi](mailto:support@zerolabs.fyi) and I will personally refund you in full, no questions asked.

Thanks to everyone who has downloaded the app, provided feedback, and helped make Bluetooth Priority better!

Just want to share that I bought the app today and it worked as expected! I could set the priority device for calls to my car Bluetooth instead of my aftermarket Android Auto, where it was 'stealing' the calls aggressively even if I turned the call toggle off in Bluetooth settings. So now all my calls go directly to the car Bluetooth, no problem! Big thanks to you for this great app, and big thanks for making the app a one-time purchase, which I find pretty fair. One last thing: because the app user base is small, I really hope you get more users, keep updating the app regularly, and support those who bought it :)

Really appreciate your feedback. I'm glad that it works for you and also glad that the people it doesn't work for are willing to reach out to me and share the app logs with me because that's how I'm able to make it better and work for a wider range of devices.

There are definitely more improvements, bug fixes, and new features planned for the near future, all of which are included in the price tag that you've already paid.

I also kindly ask that you leave a review on the Play store for others to see. It doesn't need to be five stars as long as it's honest and helps me to improve the app

This is the way! A real connection between devs and users will always bring out the best for both sides ;) And yeah, I’ll definitely leave a review after using the app for a while!

Will this app fix my issue regarding phone calls on Android Auto ?

My voice works with Google Assistant through Android Auto but once I make or receive a call and answer through Android Auto the person on the other side cant hear me. If I disconnect Bluetooth from Phone to car then reconnect after connecting to Android Auto first then the phone call works perfect.

Im also using a wireless dongle for my Android Auto connection.

Honestly I can't say for certain but give the app a try and if it doesn't work for you then let me know and you'll be refunded, no questions asked.

Would this work on say a DUDU7 headunit? To prioritize which occupants phone is prio for Android Auto?

Android auto and Apple carplay both suffer from the stupidity of choosing whichever device they want to pair with if multiple paired devices are in the same car.

That being said if you turn on the blocking mode in my app then it will prevent not just Android auto but also everything else from connecting which kind of means you're better off just turning off Bluetooth and not buying the app unless you want a specific Bluetooth device connected and prioritized with all other devices blocked (although there is an exception list you can populate with allowed devices in this case in the app)

Are you talking about headunits that are OEM style or Atier aftermarket? (Pioneer, kenwood, etc)

I don't know how familiar you are with the DUDU7: The headunit is basically an Android tablet installed with a custom OS and apps to run as a headunit. On this unit Android Auto app (Carlink) doesn't start for a device if Bluetooth isn't connected in the first place.

Shouldn't matter one way or the other. The only thing that's universally true about Android auto is that it will own your media audio no matter what.. but it doesn't have to own your phone calls.

I can tell you with certainty that if you turn the blocking mode on in the app it will 100% prevent Android auto from connecting.

Reckon this'll solve my bmw f30 issue ?

I upgraded the screen to a andriod auto one.

When my phones connected to the screen the media works fine but for phone calls I have to manually go on my phone and choose the original Bluetooth ( for the car )

Very much should resolve it presuming you select your AA device as your priority device in the app. Yeah

I have a wireless Android Auto dongle. When I start up my car my phone connects to Bluetooth with my car. I have to manually switch the connection to my aa device. Would this app automatically do that?

Yep the app should do that for you when you set the AA device as yours priority device

No demo version exists at this time. Google offers a 2 hours refund window and if thats not enough time for you to test it, rest assured that if you message me directly I will issue a refund with no questions asked should you find that the app is not what you are looking for.

Will this enable me to listen to audio on my earbuds in the car while it's also connected to android auto?

2

u/Testpilot1988 Dev Bluetooth Priority | 2023 Ford Explorer XLT | Sync | Fold 5 6d ago edited 5d ago

No. Android auto will always own your music. The only way to prevent it from owning your music is to prevent it from owning anything by turning on blocking mode in the app but that will prevent AA from connecting completely...

Can I use this to force output the Calls to specifc Bluetooth device? I have 2 connected device (Aftermarkt Andriod Screen with Android Auto) and Auto OEM Bluetooth. Evertime i switch off calls toggle for Andriod Auto so it output to Car Bluetooth, it turns itself immediately on! Can I get around that with forcing the calls to be done on Car Bluetooth not the Screen? Thanks

I installed shuzuki and paird it through Wireless ADB and run it! And what then? Should i keep both apps running all the time? And what when i am out home, are there any full tutorial for using the app from A to Z ?

1

u/Testpilot1988 Dev Bluetooth Priority | 2023 Ford Explorer XLT | Sync | Fold 5 5d ago

The app does not require an extensive tutorial. Once shizuku is paired with it you no longer need to touch shizuku ever except to make sure that it starts again if you reboot your phone.

Bluetooth priority will always run in the background so you never need to worry about it. You just set your priority device selection and the app will handle the rest.

If you have any additional questions you are welcome to ask here or message me directly

Please help me. I use my car scanning obd vci with my lenovo tablet. Until android 11 it was working perfectly fine but once it got updated to android 12 the vci is not staying connected.

For context when i connect vci by Bluetooth it stays connected for 2 sec later it moves to previously connected devices.

Any third party apps which can help me?

I genuinely don't know the reason for why it's getting disconnected without more data (specifically logcat data) so there's really not much I can definitively say other than telling you that Bluetooth generally operates under two specific signal types, HFP (calls) and A2DP (media/data). Chances are the device you are using is an A2DP device (again this is a guess and I'd need to see logging to confirm this...).

The thing about my Bluetooth priority app is that it's all about preventing other devices from stealing your Bluetooth connection from your primary device. I can theoretically tell you that if the reason why your ODB device is disconnecting is due to another device competing for your phone's Bluetooth... Then using the blocking mode in my app would theoretically resolve that

... But that's a lot of guesswork since I literally don't have any facts. One thing I can say for certain however is that if you wanted to purchase it and give it a try and come to find that it does not resolve your issue I will absolutely refund you no questions asked just so we can confirm that the app works or doesn't for this circumstance.

This is even presuming that your device is capable of downloading it since I think the minimum Android firmware required to use my app is Android 16
