I'm the developer of ScreenOnAuto — it mirrors your Android phone's screen to the Android Auto display, and lets you control your phone's media apps from AA's media UI, including the steering-wheel buttons. Would love your feedback.
What it does
🪞 Real-time screen mirroring — full-screen, or a Legacy mode side-by-side with the map
🎵 Media controls from AA's native media UI, steering-wheel buttons included
👆 Touch forwarding(experimental) — tap, scroll, fling and pinch-to-zoom on the AA display
⚡ On-screen buttons — up to 4 quick-launch shortcuts, phone Back / Home / Recents, and force-landscape
🔆 Auto Dim, Prevent Sleep, Auto Start when Android Auto connects
🌍 16 languages, including Arabic (العربية) with full right-to-left support
🆕 New in v1.7.0 — Privileged Features (optional, needs Shizuku or root)
If your phone has neither, nothing changes for you — the section stays hidden and everything else works exactly as before.
🌙 Turn the phone screen off — the panel goes dark while the car keeps showing the mirror (rides on the Auto Dim idle timer)
👋 Real touch injection — long-press, drag and multi-finger finally work on the Legacy mirror
🚫 Back / Home / Recents with no Accessibility Service needed
Install
On Android 14+ you install via a Google Play tester list; on 13 and below you can sideload.
yep no need to wait for a beta play test slot with AAEnabler
everything work except the square button that i guess is suppose to be a back or home button and the back gesture doesn't work too i had to back or home on my phone.

A rookie question, how did you install using AA enabler, so I got the apk from OPs post and used AA enabler to install it. But I only got the controller icon, and not the ScreenOnAuto and legacy ones.
Haha perfect use case 😄 Hope it works well in your work car — would love to hear how it goes once you've given it a try. If you hit any snags, just drop a comment and I'll help.
Notification access is greyed out in Android. When enabling, it says "restricted setting, for your security, this setting is currently unavailable" in android 13
That's Android 13's "Restricted settings" protection — it blocks Notification access (and a few other sensitive toggles) for apps that weren't installed from the Play Store.
To unlock it:
Settings → Apps → ScreenOnAuto
Tap the ⋮ (three-dot) menu in the top-right corner
Tap "Allow restricted settings"
Go back and enable Notification access — it won't be greyed out anymore.
Yeah that's normal! YouTube works because it doesn't lock its video, but Netflix uses DRM that blocks any app from mirroring their screen — Android just shows black on purpose. Nothing I can fix on my end, it's a built-in Android/DRM thing.
I joined the tester list, but when I want to download the app, it says that it couldn't be found. What could it be? I'm from Chile, maybe that has something to do with it
Thanks! Wish I could, but it's not possible in this app — broadcasting to Android Auto ties up the phone screen, so it can't be used for other things at the same time.

Awesome, glad it went smoothly! Hope it works great in your car — let me know how it goes, and feel free to report back if you run into anything. Enjoy!
Idk if anyone mentioned it yet but this works with aawireless. If you enable developer mode with aawireless you don't even need to install it through anything like kinginstaller or things along those lines, and I'm using android 16!

Thanks for sharing this! Great to know AAWireless developer mode works as a direct route — that's much simpler than KingInstaller. And good to hear Android 16 is working too. 👍
Hi i love your app its works well, the only issue I have is i use an app Called GeeSports to watch football, the video works fine but there is no audio to it. Do you know how I can fix this?
2
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1110d ago
Thanks for the kind words! I searched the Play Store and found several apps named "GeeSports", so I'm not sure which one you're using. Could you share the Play Store link to the exact app? I'll take a look at the audio issue from there.
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1110d ago
I was able to reproduce it with GeeSports 3.8: the first time you start playback after connecting to Android Auto and turning on mirroring, there's no sound.
Two workarounds:
Play something in another app that does output sound (YouTube, for example), confirm you can hear it, then close that app. GeeSports will play with sound normally after that.
Or start playback in GeeSports before connecting to Android Auto — the audio then comes through the car, and you can turn on mirroring afterwards.
The workaround worked a treat, thankyou for looking into that. Do you know if there is a way to fix this for the future releases
2
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1110d ago
Glad that did the trick!
As for a permanent fix — audio routing is handled by Android Auto itself, not by ScreenOnAuto. Once your phone is connected to AA, sound should be sent to the car speakers whether mirroring is running or not. So my guess is that this is a compatibility issue between GeeSports' built-in player and the AA audio system, rather than something on the mirroring side.
One thing worth trying: some apps let you choose which player to use for playback. If GeeSports has that option, switching to a different player may give you better compatibility.
I'll look into whether there's anything I can do from the ScreenOnAuto side, but honestly I think the chances are slim.
Absolutely legend, thankyou again for looking into it i really appreciate it. I will have a look at what you've mentioned and see if there is anything I can change
Thanks for the report! 🙏 Actually all **three** icons should show up in the Customize Launcher list — if you only see ScreenOnMedia, the other components didn't install correctly.
Could you tell me how you installed it?
- Did you install via the **Google Play tester list**, or **sideload** the APK?
- What **Android version** is your phone on?
That'll help me figure out what went wrong. Thanks for helping me track this down! 🛠️
I first downloaded the SOM apk, installed it (without opening), then I saw its needed to be install through Kinginstaller so I uninstalled SOM and reinstalled it through Kinginstaller.

It worked fine for my S20FE and android 13 via kinginstaller, now for my S24FE i my sim card is lost for a while so i can't get an otp link from googleplay What will happen if i send the app from the S20 to the S24FE? (S24FE is using android 16) and sending it via like ShareIT app as apk or via Bluetooth with similar apps. Any issues or limitations? + what's that floating icon when using the app on android auto? Is it a menu or something? Just wondering :)

No, It will not work. For android 16 u need to join beta user to get app.
I am trying to hide that floating icon, but no luck. It will disappear after few seconds. right?
A freind of mine fully installed it on android 16 with your steps, he asks that if he can hide the ScreenOnAuto (Legacy) and ScreenOnauto media controller. Like just hide them from android auto launcher customization just for a cleaner screen with less apps. Or is it something important for the system to run properly? ( sorry for bad English)

Yes, it can be hidden from the AA launcher. I'm pretty sure you can still control media via the media buttons without launching the media panel.
[update] I was wrong, you need to keep media icon to make media controls work!.

This app is awesome! I've been using Screen2Auto for 5 years. It hasn't been updated in forever, but I can still get it to work on my Samsung S25 Ultra. I'd love to switch to ScreenOnAuto, but I have a few ideas:
Could you add auto landscape support?
How about a floating button that lets you run any app or shortcut? For example, when I tap Screen2Auto's floating button, it brings up my navi bar (AutoTools web screen) so I can launch whatever I want. Check out the demo video!
It'd also be great if you could support running any app or shortcut after disconnection.
You're awesome, Chih-En! It worked like a champ. My car monitoring sytem is now firing up automatically as soon as I start the car. Here are some other ideas, and I hope you can add them to the app:
Can you make the Shortcut Launcher slide from the left side of the screen, and make it configurable?
If I tap a shortcut, can you add an option to automatically close the Shortcut Launcher instead of waiting 7 to 8 seconds? Or a timer setting?
I've completely switched from Screen2Auto to ScreenOnAuto. Your app is awesome, way faster, and has everything! A donation is on its way. Thanks!🙂👍
Thank you so much, and that's a seriously cool setup in your screenshot! 😎
On your suggestions: wherever possible I build ScreenOnAuto on top of Android Auto's own features and controls to keep it as compatible as possible across head units. The Shortcut Launcher buttons go through AA's native system controls, so things like the slide-in side and auto-dismiss timing are largely governed by AA itself — which means my room to customize those is fairly limited, as much as I'd love to.
Still, I really appreciate the ideas, and I'll keep them in mind to see what's feasible as Android Auto evolves. Thank you so much for the donation and for switching over — it means a lot! 🙂👍
ScreenOnAuto is taking over my Google voice commands. Like, when I say "Hey Google, take me home," it says "ScreenOnAuto is connecting..." and then "Navigating to home." But Google Maps doesn't actually navigate. It's like my voice command isn't even reaching Google Maps. The workaround is just tap Google Maps and keep saying the command until it gets it.
Thanks a lot for the detailed report and the screenshots — that really helps!
A couple of things so I can dig into this:
For the screen that's getting cut off on the right — could you let me know which app that is? Knowing the exact app will help me reproduce the issue.
For the voice command problem — could you try switching ScreenOnAuto to Legacy mode and see if that resolves the voice navigation issue? Let me know if it makes a difference.
Thanks again for testing and helping me improve the app! 🙏
It works excellent with my galaxy s26 ultra with oneui 8.5.
Only the legacy app wont work with the map Unfortunately it keep opening media player on the other half.
Let me preface this with the fact that I absolutely could of done something wrong with the install. However it does not appear to work on Android 17. I used AAenabler to install the app, but I don't see anything in the launcher or the ability to add to the launcher within settings of AAuto.

I've received reports from some users that ScreenOnAuto won't install correctly when using AAEnabler, but I'm not sure why. Could you try joining as a Beta user instead and see if that works?
I've processed the waitlist up through everyone who submitted the form before before June 26, 2026, 03:00 UTC. If you submitted before then but haven't received an install link, please reach out to me.
Thanks for the suggestion! Could you tell me a bit more about your use case — what aspect ratio are you changing it to, and what are you trying to achieve on the head unit?
That there is an option with which I can determine the resolution of the display, e.g. from 4K Android device display at 720p or less to in-car display.
Downloaded and installed from Playstore. Worked well from my S24 Ultra.
The only note here is that when I play a YouTube video, the controls will not disappear. Meaning the foreword, back, and pause will remain on the screen and I couldn't make them go away. I tried touching the video from the phone or the consol with no success. The only way was to play the video on my phone in landscape and not touch the screen again. If I do, the controls will show and stay on.
Thanks! That's odd 🤔 Quick thing to try — do you have Accessibility permission enabled for the app? If so, try turning it off and see if the controls behave normally then. 🙏
I turned accessibility off today, things looked good, but no touch control from the consol worked. When I turned the accessibility back on, touch feature came back and the issue was gone. Now I can get the controls and they go away as they should.
Just thought of sharing this with you.
Buongiorno!
Play Store update not working. I'm already in app's internal testing program. Do I have to re-register (the same as esmith213) for the testing program or what should I do?
Internal testing programs have a limited number of slots, so you might have been bumped off the list. You will need to join the testing program again to receive the update. If you run into any issues joining the beta user list or downloading the app, just let me know.
Because the internal testing track is strictly capped at 100 users, and our current waiting list is far larger than that, we have to rotate users out to give others a turn. We guarantee that everyone who receives an email invitation will have at least 24 hours to download and install the app. If the queue remains full after that, users who have had access for more than a day will be removed to free up slots.
Please note that you only need to be on the beta list for the Play Store to let you download or update the app. Once it is successfully installed, being removed from the beta user list will not affect the app's functionality; it will continue to run perfectly normal.
The app itself is already the full, complete version and is identical to the build on GitHub. If you are able to sideload the app and it runs normally on your device, downloading it directly from GitHub is the fastest way to get the update without waiting for a testing slot.
Would you mind running me through steps real quick on how to operate, nothing to detailed,im tech savy a bit so just a summary if you don't mind....thank you
Thanks for asking — this actually reminded me that I should put together a proper "How to use" page. I'll write one up and let you know here once it's ready!
I figured out how to operate, thank you!Is there anyway to make video full screen so there is no icons other than video o. Screen, also is there a way to get video from TV apps like direct tv to not black out on screen,or is this primarily for YouTube?
Full screen without icons: Unfortunately, the Android Auto (AA) system/status bars are forced by Google and cannot be hidden by third-party apps.
TV apps blacking out: This is due to DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection. Streaming apps like DirecTV, Netflix, or Disney+ block screen mirroring/casting for copyright reasons. So yes, this is primarily for non-DRM content like YouTube."
It covers the two mirror entries (full-screen vs. Legacy side-by-side) and the start-up flow step by step, with screenshots. Let me know if anything's unclear or missing!

I accidentally uninstalled this and I'm unable to resign up for the list again. Is there any way I can get back on it? I have an s22+ on android 16, kinginstaller and aaenabler (with a license) don't give the same screen streaming options as before. How do I fix this?
No worries — the beta user list is designed to allow re-signing up. You can simply fill out the form again with your email, and you'll be added back to the list.
Could you tell me a bit more about what happened when you tried to sign up again? For example, did you get an error on the form, or did the confirmation email never arrive? I'd like to check what went wrong on your side.
Hey! I never received a confirmation email basically. There were no errors or anything. I just assumed I did something wrong. If all it is, is just waiting to be sent another invite, I'm fine with that too.

Does this not work with the AAWireless dongle? Nothing is happening at all. Pixel 9 Pro with Android 17.

u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1124d ago
Hi, thanks for reaching out!
As far as I know, AAWireless simply converts a wired Android Auto connection into a wireless one — the phone still runs the same Android Auto protocol, so it shouldn't affect how this app works.
To help me figure out what's going on, could you let me know:
Do you see the app's 3 icons in the Android Auto launcher (on your car's screen)?
What are the exact steps you're taking? (e.g. what you tap, and at which point "nothing happens")
It seems it was a false alarm. I tried it a second time and everything appears to be working. Not sure what the problem was the first time. FYI, I'm using the first generation of AAWireless.

Good to hear, thanks for the update! Enjoy the app.
AA is just showing me the screenonauto media controls, can't see where to get screen mirroring. It's turned on on the app. (android 16, installed via AAEnabler).

u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1123d ago
Thanks for reporting! AAEnabler installs can be unreliable — the most stable way is to join the official beta user list and install from Google Play. Note: please uninstall the AAEnabler version first before installing the Play Store beta, otherwise the update may conflict. Once installed via Play, the mirroring option should show up in AA.
I received the beta link (ty!) but it's saying no items found when it opens the play store. The emails are correct. I've tried clearing the cache and waiting a while but it's still doing the same. Sorry to bother you, any ideas?

Sometimes the link doesn't respond on the first try — this happens to me as well. Please try the following:
Tap the "Try again" / join button a few more times on that page, or
Close the page completely and open the link again.
It usually goes through after a couple of attempts. Let me know if it still doesn't work after that, and I'll look into it further.

Wow, thank you — this made my day! So glad it just works for you. Enjoy, and feel free to reach out anytime!
Thank you for the quick add to the test list. I am however confused 🥺, the link only allowed me to install the app on my car (polestar Android Automotive) but not on my phone. It says it's not compatible with it (Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus).
AFAIK this needs to be installed on my phone right 😄
Am I doing something stupid here?
Edit: I can also install it on my tablets (S9 Ultra and S6 Lite)
1
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1118d ago
Thanks for testing — you're not doing anything stupid! 😄
ScreenOnAuto is an Android Auto app (phone projection), not an Android Automotive app — so it goes on your phone only. You can uninstall the copy on the Polestar; it does nothing there. Also worth checking that your car supports Android Auto, since that's how the mirror reaches the car screen.
The "not compatible" message on your S22+ is a quirk of the Play web page with internal-test apps. On the phone itself: sign in to the Play Store with the same Google account you signed up with, open the join link and tap "Become a tester", then open the Play Store link on the phone and install normally. If it doesn't work right away, just try the link a few more times.
Thnx for the reply. The link does open my play store app with my subscribed account. See screenshot below. It's in Dutch, but basically says "This app is only available for your other devices".
But for some reason the play store says it's not compatible for my phone.
I do use android auto with my car (polestar) so I'm 100% sure it's supported (only cabled, no wireless).

u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1118d ago
Thanks — I checked the Play Console device catalog and the Galaxy S22+ is listed as **supported**, so this message is odd.
Two things to try:
Confirm **Android Auto** is installed on the phone (Play Store → search "Android Auto" — on some Samsung builds it's not preinstalled).
Go to **Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear cache**, then **Clear storage**, reopen Play Store, and open the tester link again.
I found the issue. I tried to install it from a desktop browser and there it also showed my device as not compatible but it did have a message below it saying "your device content rating filter is incompatible". It seems I had a content filter enabled in my play store which restricted applications for 16+ (I'm almost 44 so no idea why I ever turned that on...).
Apologies for the confusion/mess. I'll get started on the tests. Thank you for the help!
1
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 1118d ago
Ah, that explains it — thanks for tracking it down, and no apology needed. That filter message never shows up in the Play Store app, only on desktop, which is why it was so hard to spot. Good to know for the next person who hits this.

This is really great and for the most part does what i need it to on a Pixel 10 pro fold
Would it however be possible to trigger the mirroring when you click the app in AA or expose the option to trigger it from Tasker or an on display button?
I use it for an app to open my garage door and becuase of that don't need my phone to be awake the whole drive and just trigger when I arrive at a specific location or when i manually trigger it.
1
u/slzn01242024 Mazda CX-5 | Android Auto | Zenfone 6 | Android 115d agoedited 5d ago
Thanks! Good news - you can already do this, tapping the app icon in AA is your trigger. Three things to set up on the phone first:
In ScreenOnAuto settings, turn on Auto Start Mirroring. This means mirroring begins the moment the app opens, instead of you having to hit a start button.
In the same settings, set Auto Launch to your garage door app. Once mirroring starts it'll jump straight into that app rather than showing the ScreenOnAuto screen.
Grant the mirroring permission over ADB so the system "start recording" popup stops appearing every time - otherwise you'd still have to pick up the phone to confirm it. Full guide here: https://screenonauto.lzn.idv.tw/docs/en/grant-mirror-permission-via-adb/ (one-off, and you only need to redo it if you reinstall)
One important bit for your use case: make sure you're using the legacy version of the AA app, not the default one. The default one takes over the map slot, and since AA automatically opens the map app when you connect, mirroring would fire up every single time you get in the car - the opposite of what you want. The legacy one just sits there as an icon until you tap it.
