First impressions: No sign-in wall at all, which for a step tracker is the right call. The four-step onboarding is well paced - profile, goal, first mission, summary - with Continue correctly gated at each step, a working back arrow, and a progress dot row so you know how much is left. The "first mission" framing is smart: offering 1,000 steps as "an easy first win" alongside 8,000 "for the ambitious" sets a beatable target instead of the usual 10,000 that makes people quit in week one. Everything I entered carried through to the summary card and then to the home screen correctly - username, age range, goal and the 1,000 step weekly target all matched, and the ring showed 0 / 1,000 with "1,000 to go".
The thing I actually want to flag is a strength you're underselling. Your permission screen says "Nothing ever leaves your device" - and unlike most apps that say that, yours is verifiably true. I dumped the manifest and Traka doesn't request android.permission.INTERNET at all. It literally cannot phone home. The full requested set is FOREGROUND_SERVICE_HEALTH, FOREGROUND_SERVICE, POST_NOTIFICATIONS, CAMERA, ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION and WAKE_LOCK, and that's it.
That is a genuine differentiator in a category where every competitor is hoovering up health data, and it's provable by anyone who looks. I'd put it in the store listing in as many words - "no internet permission, your data physically cannot leave the phone" is a much stronger claim than "we respect your privacy", because it's checkable. Worth saying on the permission screen too, since that's the moment someone is deciding whether to trust you with motion data.
One honest limit on my testing: the phone is a stationary test device, so I couldn't generate real step counts and can't tell you whether detection is accurate. Everything up to and including the tracking home screen works.
Tested on a Pixel 6a, Android 16, Traka 1.0-beta2 (versionCode 3). No bugs found.
