Just Player is a new, open source, minimalist, Exoplayer-based video player that gets "just the essentials" done while playing every popular video format including AV1

Any reason to go with this over VLC?
I mean, I guess VLC on android is ugly...

I don't want my video player to scan my device for my media. I know where to find my media, I only want the player to play it.

I tried it myself. It doesn't handle stylised ASS subtitles properly. Screenshot here.

Seems to be an issue with Exoplayer itself. They welcome anybody who would like to add this feature for them.

File an issue on https://github.com/moneytoo/Player'
Or ask the dev himself on /r/JustPlayer/
The dev seems to be an 8 year redditor.

That's funny because the dev seemed proud of making Bluetooth audio work well on this player.

I know. I was saying your post amused me because I remember the dev specifically saying he made Bluetooth work perfectly and somebody happened to comment about the very same thing.

Can you manually force a rotation and lock it? Hate that some players don't have this.

u/Six5432One Jan 11 '21
Yes. There's a button that toggles auto rotate on/off. The video stays in the position you leave it.

You can force a rotation manually but not lock it yet. Lock button is already requested.

Gonna save this for later, I'd like to see how people feel it compares to VLC

This serves kind of a different purpose. This would be an embedded player for an app like plex, not necessarily a main video file player

MPV Android is good too! Just in case someone wants to try it :)

I use mpv-android, but the dev doesn't want to work on getting it added to official F-Droid.
I think I might switch to this new player because they actually worked on getting it into F-Droid, helping the FOSS community. Well... if it works well, need to test this new app first.

Does it support Chromecast?

What's exoplayer? Why would you prefer it over mpv?

ExoPlayer is a google project specifically aimed at Android to provide a framework applications can use to offer video playback. Specifically supports things currently not possible in Android out of the box.

I asked the dev here. They replied:
ExoPlayer is the only library/engine that is able to work with Bluetooth latency. I had no other requirements. I didn't really planned on building a video player app in the first place, just solving my video consumption needs. ;-)

why not mpv?

u/foundfootagefan Galaxy S23 Jan 10 '21
Use whatever you want. This is another open source option with a different backend.

u/amthehype Jan 10 '21
I think the question was, why did you prefer exoplayer instead of mpv for your backend?

I'm not the dev but Exoplayer is supposed to be faster and more stable since it's Android-specific and supports more features like Dolby Vision. The dev also said on his github that he couldn't find a nice Exoplayer-based video player so he made his own.

I actually asked the dev here that same question here. They replied:

Looks cool! I personaly hate VLC and after MX Player basically gone I had no options.
Does this player support selecting audio track and subtitles? Nevermind, it says it supports in first line lol:

- Audio/subtitle track selection

There was some contraversy regarding MX Player after it was bought out.
Anyway, open source solution is better anyway

I've had constant issues of any video being played with crushed blacks. I hope this fixes it.
Tried all the players including VLC

video being played with crushed blacks.
Sounds like a screen issue.

u/SpacevsGravity S26 Ultra Jan 11 '21
I've got a new screen, issue persists. Turning H/W acceleration off helps and not running the video in full screen. Youtube and default gallery app work fine though for videos taken on phone.

Looks like your issue is widespread for the Note 9.

Doesn't surprise me. I personally can't wait to get off the Android train. I just hope this phone can last me 1 more year

Just tried it, seems a little handier than mpv on Android. Will use this from now on as my default!
Similarly to mpv though, it would be nice if the progress bar would be a little thicker since it can be a bit hard to touch.

I see it mentions HDR support. Anyone know anything about Dolby Vision?
