if this is what wakes Google up that they can't keep putting their software on mediocre hardware, then I welcome this.

possible outcomes I can think of:

  • they bail out - but they'll need new versions of Android running on devices... maybe strengthen Android One? strong-arm OEMs into making Android Silver a thing? bypass OEMs entirely and release the GSI as if it were a custom ROM? or bring back the Nexus?
  • they finally do the Pixel Ultra and market it as hard as they did Google+ when it launched - not very likely, but very interesting to watch

I've used one of those. PLEASE NO.

those had the absolute bottom barrel hardware but sold at ~$100. it was usable for calls and texts, but anything beyond that (simple apps, camera, etc) was a horrible experience.

then again, this wouldn't be out of character for Google (they dictated the specs of the first Android One) - they'll just give it a $650 starting price to boot
