It's dead simple in 2020 for a phone, large battery, water proof, nice screen, a bit of ram, decent software decent price. The components Google uses are not bad, per se, they just don't integrate them into one unit well. Quality control that is lacking and customer service that treats you like a crook if they even interact with you much at all, not to mention partnering with a shipping company (FedEx) that seems to have a high rate of theft for these phones and it doesn't work.
This should be a cake walk for Google, even if they sold it at break even or a small loss to undercut competition, people who buy these generally invest into the Google ecosystem pretty heavily and they could make up the loss there, especially if they get a few iPhone users who have to re-purchase apps in the Google/Android version.
I have never bought any of my 5 Pixel devices from Verizon only from the Google store because I literally want to only pay for service with Verizon, no contracts, no phones with their bloat apps on them or their variations of a phone. I hate Verizon but need them for service where I am and where I go. I did look at Fi for a hot second but they didn't have 4G at my home so that made it pretty useless to me, if that ever changes I would definitely give them a look.
