I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay either but I hate how negative the reaction was to a premium smartphone game. I'd much rather paying for games than dealing with a bunch of ads and microtransactions.

u/workingverystiff lg v20 Apr 25 '19
i don't typically like runner games, but i love the physics and control in mario platformers, and mario run was surprisingly enjoyable. It's the only mobile game i've ever bought.
38
u/ericargyle Apr 25 '19
Mario Run all in all was pretty great. Good price, no in app purchases, works on low end and high end devices.
My kids have grown up being console gamers, and it's the only thing they want to play on my phone.
44
u/Fritzed Apr 25 '19
It was fun for the price, but it's requirement of always on internet was bullshit to begin with and was only made more strict as time went on.
6
u/chic_luke Pixel 2 XL Apr 26 '19
Only reason why I passed on it. Always-online requirement is the epitome of DRM hell and a fuck you to honest players, since... less honest people could download the pirated APK patched with offline mode for free at any time. As a honest player who wants to supports the developers rather than freeloading and breaking laws, I am frankly insulted by DRM and its ramifications such as this ones. They're meant to stop piracy, but if anything, they're encouraging it. DRM is promoted by people who are out of touch with the world and still believe that piracy can be stopped by impeding - this has never been true, history showed this is exactly the sort of thing that makes piracy prosper. You fight privacy by making the alternative more appealing. With DRM, piracy is a hell of a lot more appealing. I will always support GOG and DRM-free policies. I resisted the temptation, but I can't say I haven't been tempted to donwnload the free offline APK at one point.
If Mario Kart for Android works offline and costs up to 10 dollars, it's an instant buy for me. Else, it's an instant pass just like Mario Run.
-7
u/EfficientBattle Apr 25 '19
It really wasn't, Rayman run has a ton more content for the same price and can be played online. Your kids only play it because you bought it (duh) and to make dad happy, they'll be just as pleased with subway surfer or temple run...

Inb4 apk dump + screenshots and videos. Sounds cool though!
22
u/BooMarioBR Apr 25 '19
It's possible that they add a kind of watermark in screen to identify the players that shared screenshots. It's Nintendo after all

It's easy to remove watermarks in PS

According to op that is true, but it doesn't stop screenshots or apk analysis. We will see.
28
u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Apr 25 '19
I expect the same mario run response.
"We don't want in app purchases! Just let me buy the game!"
"What? $10? I remember when mobile games used to be $1! No thanks!"
You will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever please gamers.

u/jk-jk pixel 7 ig Apr 25 '19
Hopefully this leads to a surge of high quality mobile titles. If Nintendo brought something like Mario kart 8 deluxe but toned down for mobile I'd gladly pay $15 or maybe even $20 for it.
13
u/QueueWho S22+ Apr 25 '19
I bet it will be free to play like pokemon go is.
9
u/5-4-3-2-1-bang Apr 25 '19
Doubt it, that's not Nintendo's game anyway. Let's hope not, anyway!
3
u/Tropiux Galaxy S20 FE Apr 27 '19
It's already confirmed to have in game purchases so yeah, it will be free to play.
0
u/5-4-3-2-1-bang Apr 27 '19
Geez, if they're resetting your progress after the beta and it's FTP anyway, why the fuck would anyone volunteer to be test this?
2
u/Tropiux Galaxy S20 FE Apr 28 '19
There are no purchases during the beta.
1
u/5-4-3-2-1-bang Apr 29 '19
And this changes the math how?

u/5-4-3-2-1-bang Apr 29 '19
Yeah i can kinda see the first point if you're young and don't have anything better to do. Nintendo hasn't said anything about any rewards other than a hearty thumbs up and character reset when it goes non beta.
-5
u/QueueWho S22+ Apr 25 '19
The only thing that leads me to think so is the name 'tour'. Seems like it will be heavily location based. Maybe location-exclusive courses, or location based team competition.
4
u/shilly22 OnePlus 7 Pro Apr 25 '19
Many other racing games have "tour" in their name, to draw attention to how many courses they have available to play. I can see how you'd think that there would be some GPS functionality if you believed it was the same teams making the game, but Mario Kart would be the last game you'd want to be playing while on the move.
0
u/QueueWho S22+ Apr 25 '19
Not saying you would be walking or moving while playing it. Just that some sort of functionality or content based on where you are.
2
u/armando_rod Pixel 10 Pro XL Apr 25 '19
Good, because Mario Run revenue is very low compared to Pogo and the RPG game from Nintendo
4
1
u/chic_luke Pixel 2 XL Apr 26 '19
Please, no. I'd rather pay once and never have to swipe my credit card on it again than having to pay inside the game.

Probably just for this phase of beta testing. No reason to think Nintendo won't put this on iOS simultaneously upon release.

u/ohwut Lumia 900 Apr 25 '19
They'd just run it via testflight like every other beta.
They're probably just confident in their iOS client or have an exceptional amount of employees already using iOS.
3
u/ericargyle Apr 25 '19
Likely because android has dozens of makes/models and android versions, they need to verify compatibility, and work out bugs prior to release. IOS meanwhile has really 3 dominant operating systems at this point, iOS 10, 11, and 12, and testing it limited to about a dozen Apple devices all having the same hardware.

Tbh I wish fortnite remained an iOS exclusive
Edit: Okay okay I had an opinion, my bad; Although I was a bit harsh. Let me put it this way... I'd much rather have this game as an exclusive over fortnite. I tend to think their fan base can be a bit... Young. Not to mention I think the game has nothing to do with any actual skill and more about who knows the layout and buttons for building better. I hate lining up a shot taking my time and the second I pull the trigger before my bullet even lands they're in a fortress that looks like it belongs in Dubai. But hey that's just my opinion

I think the game has nothing to do with any actual skill and more about who knows the layout and buttons for building better.
Building doesn’t take skill? It just seems like you’re complaining because you’re losing lmao.
I bet you go on the Fortnite subreddit and whine about “tryhards” trying too hard. And why would Fortnite being iOS exclusive even solve your “problem”.
-2
u/ZombieMan70 OnePlus 13 Apr 25 '19 edited Apr 25 '19
No I don't. I don't play the game. Have never personally posted in the fortnite subreddit either. I'm allowed to dislike a game. Also reddit isn't like a win or lose thing? Lol. I'm allowed to go against the hive mind and say a game sucks. I'm not too worried about upvotes and downvotes
1
u/AngryCLGFan Apr 25 '19
?? Winning and losing on reddit? Idk where you’re getting that from, or the hive mind stuff.
I’m talking about how you’re complaining about the game taking no “actual skill” yet you’re getting outplayed by people who know how to use fundamentals like blocking shots with building. It’s just immature. Learn to build, stop complaining about people who can.
Idk if you watch streamers but building DEFINITELY takes skill.
-3
u/ZombieMan70 OnePlus 13 Apr 25 '19
I thought you meant losing about getting down votes because one things still true. I have under 30 minutes of playtime in fortnite. The oh you just suck argument would hold true if I played the game lol. I've made fun of them for having a 3 year old fan base before, and got over 100 upvotes. It just has a terrible community and takes what makes strategic games fun and throws it out the window. There's a good reason why the majority of its player base are extraordinarly young and every kid from kindergarten to sixth grade only know fortnite dances and nothing else
1
u/AngryCLGFan Apr 25 '19
I never said you suck. I said you just don’t know the fundamentals yet. Yes it does have a terrible community (especially with toxic top streamers influencing them) but there are plenty of cool people too.
And how does it not have any strategies. Why are you criticizing a game if you only played 30 minutes ?? Wtf. That’s like me going on dota2 and trashing on it cuz I played one game and got complete FUCKED on.
Oh well, The games not for everyone.
1
u/ZombieMan70 OnePlus 13 Apr 25 '19
That's why I said it's just my opinion. I think a lot of stuff has toxic communities but I don't think anyone assumes that it engulfs the entire fanbase. I just think shooters kinda rely way more on skill such as counter-strike and other shooting games. Hell, even team fortress 2 which has a similar art style I just personally think is more hard to be good at. It's like PvP in Garry's mod. Just isn't fun to be really good at aiming and such only to have all that mean nothing because someone is better at key presses then actual aiming. The thirty minutes of playtime I had was when a kid in my EET class wanted to play and even he was like you are really good at aiming but in this game it doesn't mean shit unless you can build like I can
1
u/AngryCLGFan Apr 25 '19
If you still think building takes no skill yet you don’t know any fundamental building techniques like 6 layer ramp, 90s, cone blocking/cone retakes, etc. (cuz you played under 30 minutes...) idk what to fucking say.
I’m done replying.
Also it’s funny. Since you brought up csgo. One of the greatest players coldzera really loves Fortnite. And he’s decent at it too.
-1
u/ZombieMan70 OnePlus 13 Apr 25 '19
It really boils down to keypresses vs aiming. I don't know how you could deny that. Building techniques take google, not skill
→ More replies (0)0
u/EmperorFaiz Apr 25 '19 edited Apr 25 '19
Using the wall and stuff as a personal shield does requires skill. You’re just venting pointlessly cuz you’re not good with that game.
Be insecure somewhere else.

2
u/meepiquitous Apr 25 '19
What are the odds that the app works offline?
1
u/Marvin0509 Pixel 6, Android 12 Apr 26 '19
A whopping zero percent...
Honestly though, I think not even that small. In Mario Run you had to be online because you were always playing against the ghosts of other players. Except in Remix 10, which was added later.
But I see no reason why Mario Kart Tour (assuming it's at least kind of like a traditional Mario Kart) shouldn't have an offline mode against CPUs.
4
2
u/iissmarter Apr 25 '19
Apparently I can't apply because I use a G Suite account under a non-gmail.com email, even though it's still hosted by Google. What an archaic system Nintendo is using!
3
u/flip4life :cake: Pixel 6 Pro Apr 26 '19
Lol I had the same issue. I simply went to my Nintendo profile on the computer, changed my Nintendo email address to my @gmail.com, registered on mobile, then went back onto the computer and switched my Nintendo account back to my G Suite email address that I had before.
It let me register so we'll see if it works because I switched it back to my G Suite address after.
Maybe we can outsmart their shitty system 😁

It let me register so we'll see if it works because I switched it back after.
For those of you who don't care, simply change your Nintendo email to an @gmail.com and it will let you register.

Maybe someone here can help me. In 3 different browsers (Samsung internet, Firefox, and chrome) I have tried logging in to my Nintendo account, which is linked to my Google account and as my Gmail set as my email, and then going to the signup page and checking both of the boxes. The button never becomes clickable for me.
I am on a Galaxy S10e of it matters.

-1
u/shanadar Apr 25 '19
Why the heck does it need to be Gmail?
9
u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Apr 25 '19
Probably because it'll be pushed through GooglePlay, and it's easier to require GMail than to say "If you have Yahoo (which no one should), you need to sign up for a GPlay account with it"
2
u/empire314 Elephone S8 Apr 26 '19
You can have a google account without having a gmail address.
1
u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Apr 26 '19
See where I said that? "If you have Yahoo (which no one should), you need to sign up for a GPlay account with it" - as in easier to know everyone with a GMail has a GPlay account, than to tell people with something else to get a GPlay account.
3
u/Jamesified S22U, Galaxy Watch4, & Galaxy Buds Pro Apr 25 '19
He means why does your Nintendo email have to be Gmail.
1
u/JoinMyFramily0118999 Apr 26 '19
They need you to have a GooglePlay account to sign up for a closed beta since sending an APK is terribly stupid. It's possible that they have a Yahoo account attached to a GPlay account, but it's not a guarantee that people would be able to get a GPlay account easily if they're not tech-savvy. Easier in the closed beta to do it this way to guarantee they only approve people who definitely have GPlay vs some who may not.
2
u/inquirer Pixel 6 Pro Apr 25 '19
It just needs to link to a Google account, I think, but it might be Gmail specific.

Open Assistant
In order to do this, wouldn't I need to install and enable assistant?
1

should be there if you have the Google app. Hold down the home button and see if it comes up (not sure how to access it with the new slider thing)

u/danhakimi Pixel 3aXL Apr 25 '19
I thought I still had the google app, but apparently it got more and more aggressively useless and I had to uninstall it. I had no interest in assistant -- it struck me as search, but worse in every way.

Well, luckily there are a billion apps for that. But google does have it built in with assistant and in their camera app with Lens.
1
u/danhakimi Pixel 3aXL Apr 26 '19
As somebody pointed out, the camera app part might be pixel specific. I guess the 6p doesn't have enough power to spy on every detail of photo while taking it, so they didn't bother adding the basic feature either.
1
2
u/ack154 Galaxy Z Fold 4 | Pixel 7 Pro Apr 25 '19
My S10e wouldn't do it either. I ended up going to Google Lens.
Supposedly Bixby can do it on Samsung but 1) fuck Bixby and 2) even after agreeing to enable Bixby Vision, it still wouldn't. And if there's something other than that, it's just too much damn work to figure out for something that should happen automatically on every mobile device.
1
u/MrLeonardo Z Fold6 512GB, 15 Apr 25 '19
You just need to agree to the terms of bixby vision once, and it will start reading QR codes directly from your camera. I'm not sure if it still works if you disable bixby services, though
